Question Noisy Rear Diff?

Has anybody had any problems with a noisy rear differential? I got my '98 GT 5 speed last month with about 17,000 miles on it (long story). Anyway, I get a humming/droning sound that comes from the rear end. I kind of thought it could be one or both bearings (like I had to fix in my SVX).

Before I take it to the dealership, I'm curious if anyone thinks I should have an alignment done, or I guess even rotate the tires, to see if the sound moves or changes. I've heard that the alignment is pretty critical. I've change the rear diff fluid to Amsoil synthetic gear lube hoping that would help, but there was no change. It seemed to me there were quite a few shavings in there though.

All opinions appreciated!

Rich

Hi Rich, what I initially thought was a bad bearing in the rear diff of my '92 Turbo turned out to be nothing more than worn tires (crappy Eagle GT+4). No such noise with my P-Zero's It may or may-not be the problem with your car but it's easy enough to rule out.

Thanks, that's interesting. I did go out and rotate my tires this evening and it did seem to move to the front, so I'm assuming I've got at least one bad tire. They're the original tires, and I'm kind of anxious to upgrade them anyway. I feel a lot better thinking it's a tire and not the rear diff. Even if it was a warranty thing, I didn't want to have to let the dealer mess with it.

I had the same thing when I bought my '97 GT w/ 53k miles on it. Kind of a droning low frequency noise, sometimes w/ a barely noticeable wop wop wop sound. Turns out the rear tires were original and somewhat cupped.
Another one I test drove had the same noise, so conceivably its a combination of the RE92s and the Legacy suspension.

Hee-hee, that's funny! I sold my SVX to get the Legacy GT. I couldn't afford both cars, but I couldn't pass up the deal on the Legacy, so I bailed out of the SVX. I miss it, but I am having fun with the GT. I get to shift now! WOO-HOO!

Thumbs up

Good call on the tires, guys. I got Kumho 712's put on today and the sound is gone. That makes me happy, because that sound could get kind of irritating.

I wonder what the deal is with the RE92's? Oh well, the sound bothered my wife enough to let me get the Kumho's even though there was plently of life left in the Bridgstones. (Not necesarily good life, but life nonetheless)

Hey Rich, isn't it time to add a SVX to the list?

I don't think it is just a problem with the stock 'stones' as my Turbo had Goodyear Eagle GT+4's, and to a lesser degree with my Pirelli 17" PZero's. I think it has more to do with alignment and/or lack of proper alignment than poor tires.

Thanks for the input Pete. That thought had crossed my mind. I didn't have time the other day when I had the tires put on, but I do plan on getting the alignment done ASAP.

Question

As a "Scoobie Newbie", I don't get (yet) all the bad press the RE-92 is getting. I've had them in 3 different sizes , all the way to 205/50's and they have always been a decent, quiet tire. Did I miss something?
