Default What is this noise?!?!

I"m in third gear, get it up to about 3500 rpms and when I let off the gas I hear a noise similar to if your brake pads had worn completely down and you tried stopping. Its a nice metallic grinding noise.

This is the first time I've ever heard it.

I get it too. Right around 3000rpm either downshifting or letting off throttle (3rd to 2nd is really bad). I've been told its just the heat shield rattling. Was going to get it checked out at first service.

Well it doesn't really sound like a rattling at all, more like a grinding metal on metal noise..
Like if you were tryin to brake with your pads worn all the way down.

Whatever it is it doesn't sound good at all, raises the hairs on the back of my neck..

Wheels posted the answer to this last week: it's your tranny dipstick.

Solution = pull out the the dipstick, shove it back in snug, and twist it so the handle faces the windshield. It may take some fiddling to make the rattle go away.

Sweet. I'll give that a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!

its a grind NOT a rattle...

Kinda sounds like the decompression of the gears only louder and worst...

Any grinding noise in a new car is not good news. Take it back to the dealer and have them check it out!
