hi i have a 95 legacy and the engine is shot. so im looking into swaps. im not looking for a drag car just something with some decent power that i can have some fun with every once and a while.
i found a ej20g on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-S...7261QQtcZphoto what are the pros and cons of this engine? how difficult is it to wire this engine? i know its time consuming but how demanding is the wiring mentally? ive read the writeups on how to swap usdm ej20 and pros vs cons usdm vs jdm i would like to know about the ej20g in perticular though. i have also thought about swapping in a stock US wrx setup. is this wiring easier than the previous? how much would this swap cost? with either of these swaps would i be required to change drivetrain? ie: if i did this would it wreck my stock diffs/ tranny? cn: i would like to know which one is easier to wire and which engine is better.

there are plenty of people that the stock tranny has held up for, but youll need a different clutch.
the EJ20G swap should be easier to wire up since its OBDI while the USDM EJ205 is OBDII. if your not looking to make HUGE power (not that its not capable of it but $$$), then the EJ20G is fine, there just arent as many "bolt on" parts that work for it as the newer engines. the wiring would not be that hard since its an old engine, pretty straight forward adn youd have all the wiring you need with the engine. the EJ20G is a better motor than the EJ205 also, it comes with a 16G turbo, with other STI parts that a standard WRX doesnt have, just less of an aftermarket for it, plus the mileage. |

1st off...that ebay EJ20G is EXTREAMLY overpriced.
The EJ20G is a great way to go fast on a budget (im putting one in my car in the next week of 2). The wiring isnt to diff. if you know what your doing. you will need to splice in the EJ20G wiring into the stock wiring harness. What you do is use the EJ20G harness (from ECU to engine harness) but use all the stock internal harness, like for your lights, blinkers, ext. if you know what your doing, the wiring will take you anywhere from 4-7hrs.if its your 1st time, it might take you 2-3weeks. Also another thing to consider. The stock tranny WILL NOT LAST. it all depends on how you drive, but i would not rely on it for longer then 3months at most. what would happend is eather you would break your gears from launching, shifting to fast, or break your shift fork, and no matter what your syncroes will go out also. as far as engine managment goes, pritty much the only real option is the PowerFC. if you wana be cheap go with the EJ20G If you got some more money go with a EJ20K, or EJ205 If you got more money then you know what to do with buy a USDM or JDM V7/V8 and the best thing i can tell you is BUY A FRONT CLIP! i ended up buying everything seperate, and it cost me more then a clip would have cost me. You will need X member, and couple of other things that are eather hard to find or expensive. also look around this thread and you will get more info. The EJ20G doesnt get much support from allot of people becoue its older technology and not as fast as the newer engines, but for the money you cant get a better deal. |

one thing is that behind the airbox is a MAP sensor and boost solenoid, if it doesnt come with that...your down a couple hundred bucks.
i would say, about 2500-3K at most. you also need a new front X member and a fuel pump as well. if your intrested there is someone on this forum that gets front clips for about the same price as what they are asking for just the engine and tranny. |

question: why is a map sensor considered better for a turbo engine? the wrx uses a maf sensor (at least i think) but i hear map is better. why is that? |

they have both a MAP and a MAF.
MAF messures the amount of air going into the engine. the MAP messures the pressure change. MAF tells it how much air is moving in, the MAP tells the ECU the boost pressure as well as atmospheric pressure. |

yeha. that is overpriced. a good front clip is hard to come by for a good price.
if you look around, there are several members on this forum who have just bought front clips. |

one other thing to think about
a 95 legacy is OBD-2 so if you have to pass emmissions you need to swap a ej205 (usmd wrx)in |

everything 96 or later is obd-2
but the legacy went obd-2 when the body style changed (dreams of finding elusive 95 impreza coupe for cheep) |
