We (Andrewtech and PPG) will be offering the PPG Subaru 1-4 5mt syncro sets (standard ratio) at call for pricing in USD !!!!

As promised, an in depth video of PPG gear sets in action and on a bench:

Well, here it is! Another upgraded part to save the day for hard shifting Subaru owners! More and more we notice people are breaking the stock cast syncro hubs for 3-4 and 5-R. Make sure to include in your next transmission build here at Andrewtech.

Andrewtech Automotive has worked with almost every conceivable gearset combination for model year 1999 and later Subaru's made by PPG. In addition, we are the number one importer and installer in the US. With a wide variety of combinations, Striaght Cut Syncro, Straight Cut Dog, Helical Cut Syncro, & Helical Cut Dog, combined with your stock gears, your ultimate transmission is only a phone call away. Because of our volume, you will not find a lower price on a nearly indestructible gear set anywhere!

The synchro gearsets drive just like stock, shift similar to stock, and are much stronger than stock!
You can have a nearly indestructible gearset that behaves like stock!

I had the PPG 1-4 helical cut synchro in my car along with a 2.5 liter swap and a PE1820. After the install, I drove the car like I stole it every day. I had close to 100 1/4 mile runs, consistently dropping the clutch at 5500 rpm without missing a beat. The shifting is firm and precise and will make you wonder why you stuck with the stock gears for so long. I would recommend anyone doing 240whp or more with their car to have this gearset installed. You will never have to worry again about grenading your transmission.

In respect to Andrewtech, you could not get a more professional, meticulous transmission built anywhere else. I watched Andrew at work on my transmission and the attention to detail on the build was incredible. He answered all of my questions and kept me involved in the entire process. He did such a good job on my transmission that I had him rebuild my motor as well.

I would have to say that hands down my experience with the shop was by far the best automotive maintenance experience I have ever had. Anyone who gets these gears or gets the gears installed will not be disappointed.

Andrewtech (Gearboxtech.com) builds the best Subaru PPG gearboxes! We run an AndrewTech built straight cut PPG dogbox in our 550 whp Time Attack WRX and the shifting speed cannot be matched by anything short of a sequential transmission.

Like tuning a high HP Subaru, it’s not just about the parts but instead who’s tuning it. You wouldn’t let an unproven tuner touch your $30K Subaru so don’t let new guy experiment with your $5000 gearset. Instead go with the best and most experienced builder, AndrewTech! Over the years they’ve find tuned the assembly process, identified which oem components fail, selected the best upgrades and solutions, and had us test them under the rigors of professional racing.

Just let them know you want the Element Time Attack Dogbox and you won’t be disappointed.

Without Andrewtech's PPG helical 1-4 dogbox, I wouldn't be running 11.3s @ 125 with a mere 450 whp and its TXS Dynapack whp at that... whats that 330-350 whp everywhere else?!! Anyway...

Shifting speed is unmatched by anything out there. You don't know what speed shifting even is unless you've driven one of these gearboxes HARD.

Easy to drive even in pure dogbox form... do NOT let these trannies intimidate you. In a short time at the helm you will have it down!!

And for those worried about noise... it's not that bad... I'd rather hear the whine of some beefy gears than the crunch of my stock tranny taking a crap!! Trust me, you would, too!

Below is a picture of a launch on KYB AGX struts set to the stiffest setting w/Perrin lowering springs. Notice the squat... I came out hard, and where a stock tranny would fail, the Andrewtech/PPG tranny takes it without an issue!

11.38 @ 125

Let's say you are a average Subaru owner who wants to know their options for the day that their transmission goes boom. The most commonly though of options are:

OEM gearset
RA gearset

The OEM gearset is cheap, but you've already broken one and it seems silly to replace what you broke.
An RA set seems like a good option until you consider the amount of broken RA gear threads around and they fact that the newer OEM gears are just as wide as the RA sets.

These options can cause a lot of grief with someone who has had or assumes they will have transmission problems either due to some form of racing, their higher power level, or age of the car. While the Stage 4+ crowd usually has a better understanding of their solutions, those of us that like to stay under 300WHP need to carefully choose a solution that better suits our car for the long run and our (generally speaking) more limited budgets.

Consider this... let's look at the two most commonly broken gears of the Subaru 5MT: first and second gear. That's not to say that there aren't rogue stories out there of broken third, fourth, or fifth, but in my research, 90% of "gears gone wild" stories, deal with second (most common) and first gear. This includes the stories of broken RA gears as well.

So let's be smart and:

a. replace the gears that are most commonly broken
b. replace those gears with ones that are SIGNIFICANTLY stronger
c. save lots of money and heartache in the long run

I'm a HUGE fan of the PPG 1/2 + OEM 3/4/5 combo for this reason. Most of you who are a fan of my research will know I usually don't play favorites as there are often two sides to every story. I will go out on a limb to say that the PPG 1/2 set is the best bang for the buck for the majority of Subaru owners thinking of or needing a transmission upgrade.

I agree with most of the above, except that 3rd gear probably is the number one "missed" and more than likely grinded gear. I personally have blown 3rd a few times on stock trannies.

While 1st and 2nd are more abused by just sheer stress, one should not overlook 3rd's indirect abuse. Now the problem with 3rd is that its attached to 4th... so if you do one, you must do both. Just something to consider...

What all does the 1-4 synchro gears include? Do they have billet shift forks and all that?

I am planning on 500+whp, will those gears hold up to drag racing?
What clutch would you recommend? I am currently using an Exedy twin plate.

The 1-4 syncro set does not include forks. They are optional. We do carry them. For 500+whp drag racing you might consider dog engagement. Nobody has broken a PPG syncro set I have sold, so I don't know the max they will hold. I can tell you these are the strongest syncro sets I have ever worked with.

if you wanna run that much power go with the Dog Engagement

and i was told the exedy twin plate will hold that much power. for the price people spend, it better

and will these gears hold 500whp? yes. correct me if im wrong andrew but, arent there some skylines running 8's with ppg gears.

AndrewTech has some of the best staff, knowledge and customer service around... and no im not saying that becuase hes my friend... but that is how we became friends, he knows how to take care of his customers. you will be pleased 100%

If you only did a 1/2 I assume you are more limited in gear ratio though, correct? Though a slightly longer first gear and a longer second gear might be beneficial, I suppose that you would do much better with 1-4 in the RA ratio. At some point I will definitely have to get a gear set and ppg totally seems the way to go but I can't afford it at the moment. I am very impressed by their quality and driveability.

I hear ya on that, for $1300 it had better work.

Andrew, does the $5200 include installation? What other costs would there be?

No, it doesnt include installation. Normal cost for building loose units is $650 for syncro and $750 for dog. <---5spd units. There is also approx $90 in install parts. Gasket, seal, nuts, etc.
