Andrew, I was looking around your website and wondering if you guys can make the straight cut gears for my wrx. I want the 1-2 gears but for the 3-4 can you make sti ra gears? And for the straight cut can you guys make it so the gear ratios are the same as the ra gears? I want it hold power but keep a very good powerband after I shift.

The PPG gears that I run (helical 1-4) makes use of a 3.083 1st gear... which is exactly the same ratio as an RA gearset uses. 2nd is 2.150 for PPG and 2.062 for RA... then for 3rd PPG is 1.500 vs RA's 1.545.

Sooo... that said, a more aggressive ratio stronger PPG 2nd going to a more aggressive ratio RA 3rd would make for a good combination. You'd really stay on full boil better than the full PPG set or the full RA set.

If you are talking about custom ratio's however... I wouldn't even bother... that would be VERY pricey from PPG... if they'd do it at all.

Ratio's available for the 5spd:

Code:
 Subaru WRX 5sp Dog Group N	2.916 / 2.090 / 1.555 / 1.176 / 0.900
 Subaru WRX 5sp 4 Gear str-cut (dog box)	3.18 / 1.87 / 1.32 / 0.95 / std
 Subaru WRX 5sp 4 Gear helical (dog box)	3.08 / 2.15 / 1.50 / 1.05 / std
 Subaru WRX 1/2 str-cut (dog box)	3.18 / 1.87
 Subaru WRX 1/2 helical (dog box)	3.08 / 2.15
 Subaru WRX 3/4 str-cut (dog box)	1.32 / 0.95
 Subaru WRX 3/4 helical (dog box)	1.5 / 1.05
 Subaru WRX 5sp 4 gear str-cut (syncro)	3.18 / 1.87 / 1.32 / 0.95 / std
 Subaru WRX 5sp 4 gear helical (syncro)	3.18 / 1.87 / 1.32 / 0.95 / std
 Subaru WRX 1st & 2nd str-cut (syncro)	3.08 / 1.87
 Subaru WRX 1st & 2nd helical (syncro)	3.18 / 1.87
 Subaru WRX 3rd & 4th str-cut (syncro)	1.32 / 0.95
 Subaru WRX 3rd & 4th helical (syncro)	1.32 / 0.95

QuickGTP - I think I just spoke with you on the phone.

Railguy - Yes, we can do a PPG 1-2 and RA 3-4-5 if that's what you'd like. PPG does offer "custom ratios" however the wait time and cost is definately up there. Doug is right, the ratios would be pretty neat but the strength wouldn't be there for 3rd and 4th. For hardcore drag racing like Doug does, dogboxes are the way to go.

PPG DOES offer the standard GroupN certified gear ratios in a dog engagement format. The ratios are the same as an RA gearset, and it is a complete 5-gear dog set. They are pretty complete kits, but the cost is pretty high as well.

I knew there used to be a Groug N identical to the RA gears... and had originally posted about that... but then when I looked the PPG gears up it was not listed, I edited it out.... thanks for clarifying.

But, yea, I agree... 1-2 dog and 3-4 RA may make for a good ratio combination... it does not make for a good high hp combination. Go dog all they way.

$5000 for straight cut dogbox? is this built in a case ready to ship, or is this just for all the parts? Since I live in vegas, and shipping would be a nightmare, could I get a pm with a price for a straight cut dogbox already built?

No, it doesnt include installation. Normal cost for building loose units is $650 for syncro and $750 for dog. <---5spd units.

Oh Andrew.....did you happen to send my gaskets out already? The wife said something came for me the other day, but she's gun-shy about opening boxes for me as she assumes it's another damn car part that will start another e-argument. If it wasn't from you, I think my Fleshlight finally arrived.

Also interested in the exact same thing... a pre-built straight cut dogbox but I would be picking it up.

Quick question:

When is a billet 5th gear engagement needed?

I am under the impression that most people keep the OEM 5th.

Correct, in almost every application we try to use the factory 5th gear. In use with dog engagement the factory 5th hub will break. This is why we sell the upgraded hub with the dog sets.

If you are serious about it I'll get you a quote for the whole setup. There are a few extra bits needed to fit this set and a modification we have to do here before shipping you all the parts needed.
The only difference you will notice with the dog system is the actual engagement of gear. When your in gear they drive like anything else.

When adding a PPG gearset to be used in motorsports or high HP levels do you recommend adding a LSD or upgrading rear diff?

It really depends on the end user. If you like the way your car drives then you don't need a diff. We do have PPG torsen style front diffs on the shelf. I had one in my car for a bit and loved they way the car reacted to it. I plan on buildind myself another tranny with the same diff in it, beating the crap out of it and reporting my findings with everyone here.
