Default 02 ecu into an 04?

Hi All,

I have an 04 wrx, currently running a catted 3" tbe.

A friend has an 02 wrx with a stage 2 cobb reflash (not accessport)

He is getting rid of his car and I can have the ecu if I want it. I already have a gutted factory uppipe that I haven't put in just to avoid the ol/cl issue.

Will my car be fine with the 02 ecu, up and catted tbe?

Thanks!

It will work fine. Older ECU into newer car is fine.

I know people that have done this.

Should work just fine. If it's a really old revision 2002 ECU, it may throw a CEL.

Any way to know if it'll throw a CEL?

More importantly, any way to fix it if it does?

Thanks

I had an ECUTEK reflashed 02 ECU that I gave to my friend that had the same mods and it worked out great for him on his 04.

I don't remember the CEL offhand. I think there was a newer firmware revision released to fix it, so I don't think there is anyway to fix the CEL without a reflash. You could try openecu.org- if you do have an old firmware revision, there may be a newer one there that you could use to flash it.

It was a misfire CEL. The Cob reflash should have fixed it, depending on when he got it. Try it out. If you get a lot of misfire CELs, you have the problem.

You'll be fine...no problems! Major thing where AP is different between earlier model years is in the connectors but for the most part the ECU program is very similar. It's close enough that'll be fine swapping an 02 into an 04
