Question engine mount

How many miles till you had to replace engine mounts. When I brake or accelerate I feel something movein the engine bay or tranny. Any one else experience this?

Also, I have Legacy OB 97 2.5. Anyone else have the Check Engine light on at all times. From the sounds of my muffler it sounds like the engine is misfiring. Any clues? Replaced the spark plugs, and that made a bit of a difference.

Well, my 98GT just hit 90k a few minutes ago. I feel the engine and transmission mounts need to be replaced, however I don't hear any clunking from them. The RS's that autocross locally, often hear their transmissions bucking against the tunnel under hard starts. So I'm sure that's a good sign that thier a little loose. As far as the miss condition, if you've replaced the plugs and wires you may want to suspect a fuel injector or ignition "ignitor". I have replaced a fuel injector and it seems to have cured the problem. Have you had the code pulled by a dealer or done so yourself? If the tell you it's misfiring on a certain cylinder you can always switch two of the fuel injectors around and see if it codes a misfire on another cylinder. This next part is sort of my speculation, but here goes: The 'ignitor' is the little black electronic looking component that is bolted to the metal where the rear engine brace is. On the dead center, upper half of the firewall. I have heard that the ignitor can be damaged if it is "dry fired" too much. So possibly if your car has been misfiring on a certain cylinder due to a lack of fuel, you may have damaged your ignitor as well. Once again, this is sort of my speculation. Fortunatly, my local Subaru dealer was parting out a similar year outback that had been wrecked, so I got to try a couple of different things. Here is exactly how my problems showed up and what I tried to correct them: It all started with a CEL coding misfire on #2 cylinder. I replaced the plugs and wires. That didn't work so I replaced the coil pack. That didn't work so I switched the #2 fuel injector to the #1 cyl. It still coded on #2. I decided to try the ignitor by someone's recomendation. It fixed it! yeah! Well just a short couple of weeks later, it started coding a misfire on #1 cyl. So I replaced the fuel injector in the #1 cyl., with one from the Outback they were parting out. It hasn't had a CEL yet. This was about a month ago that I replaced it. My thoughts on the whole situation: I think the fuel injector from #2 cyl. was not operating properly all the time and the continued misfire problem at that point was due to the ignitor. Once the #2 cyl. had a properly functioning injector and the ignitor was replaced the car ran ok, until that bad injector that I had removed from #2 and placed in #1 starting acting up again. Once again, this is just my ideas from all my throwing parts at it diagnostics. Hope this helps some! Good luck! And if you can afford it, go for STI engine a transmission mounts if you decide to replace them.

Thumbs up Hope that works

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I've been looking to solve this problem for a while now.

I'd like to fix these annoyances before I go ahead and modify the car further and was wondering.....About how much was it to replace the ignitor and the injector.

I paid $50 for the ignitor and $50 for the fuel injector. That's a little less than half of what they go for new. I would try the fuel injector first and if that doesn't solve it, then I would replace the ignitor. The local dealer here still has 3 of those used injectors, that they should sell for $50. Just email me if you want thier info. pleiades@appstate.net
