Talking Couple gets to keep found money

OKANOGAN, Wash. - An Okanogan County Superior Court judge says an Oroville couple can keep the $507,000 they found along Highway 97.

Jane Gerth spotted a backpack in March of 2004 in a ditch not far from her home and her husband Dan called deputies when they spotted the cash inside.

The sheriff's office seized the money and wanted to keep under drug forfeiture laws.

But Judge Chip Small says the Gerths did nothing illegal and are entitled to the money. Okanogan County Prosecutor Karl Sloan said he will appeal

as an rx7 owner said, "And they wonder why everyone hates the police."

Wow. Now that is a clever way to launder money.

"Uhm, I found it!"

"Okay, you can keep it."

Wait wait, so the prosecutor is appealing to get the money back from the people after the judge said they could keep it under the quite logical "finders keepers loosers weepers" philosophy?

If I were in their situation and got to keep the money, I'd certainly keep some for myself and pay off some things but I'd say there's some charities that deserve a lot of it more than I do. And my parents, I owe them more than money.

If I found a bag with 500k in it, the last thing on my mind would be to notify the police. And even if I did, it would be a bag with 50k in it instead.

They just dumped an assload of money out of an armored vehicle off the tower bridge here in Green Bay either in October or November. They didn't have a sense of humor for those who grabbed some of the cash though, apparently. They had a camera going and they were recording anyone who stole the money.

What kind of person would have a backpack with $500k? More importantly, would you want your name and hometown on the news if such a person was still around?

This case cites an important precedent: "but I really really want it."

imagine the weight of the bag!

actually i've seen $1 million in cash before, and a normal duffell bag would hold it.

No, like an "oh no3s" op. I don't know the details, but somehow a door opened while they were driving on the bridge and a bunch of cash blew out.

All I could find was a blurb in the archives of the local gazette:

$80,000 free-for-all no windfall
October 27, 2005
Truck spills bills on bridge, but it's not finders keepers. It may have seemed like a gift from heaven, but hellfire and brimstone may well be the result for anybody who caught and kept part of the $80,000 in currency that fell out of the back of an armored truck Wednesday morning on the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge. "Technically, it's the crime of theft, not finders keepers," said Capt. Greg Urban of the Green Bay Police Department.

The Leo Frigo memorial bridge is also known as Tower bridge.

Ditto on the $2500 left in the bag and turned into the police, but I would be paranoid if It was posted on the news that someone would come after me!

$500k would buy a hell of a blow off valve!!! I keed I keed

yeah, just go deposit 500k at your local bank. I'm sure they wouldn't notice a difference from the 30.00 balance you usually keep.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a red flag or anything.

Like I said earlier in this thread, what a smart way to launder money. Just tell the judge you found it.

And the ruling goes against you and they take the money and give it to the police... good plan.

Reading much? The judge ruled that they could keep the money. Yes, good plan indeed.
