Default Does this piece serve a function?

In MY00 to present Legacy GT's, there is the black air scoop under the hood, and then there is a piece of black plastic that is attached to the scoop. What does it do? It seems as though it is a silencer for the intake and serves no function and is there to take up space. I am asking because the one on mine is broken.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,
Gary

Well I assume ur talking about the big box that holds the piping up and is bolted to the car? or do you mean the other 3 or so lil tubes and boxes that come off the piping?
All those are just silencers and just keep air in the tube. I haVe that big black box atatched but the hole is plugged and it has a nice sound to it when i get on the car above 3000 rpms. If your still confused juste explain a little more please

I got rid of all my black plastic crap. Put on a Ganzflow for Legacy about 6 months ago. Better sound, better mpg, and better hp? at least I think so.

Dont forget the stupid little deflector attached to the hood. The one that, when you close the hood sits right in front of the intake at the front of the car. Took mine off and plugged the holes to the silencers. No real big difference, but sounds better.
