Default Vid of my Escort Passport 8500 x50 doing its job

The police dept. put one of those stationary radar signs to check your speed near my neighborhood. I grabbed my digi cam and decided to show you just how much time you have to slow down and wave to the cop in a real life situation.

**I removed the link for the weekend because I will be out of town and I don't want to come back and find all my bandwidth destroyed.**

the vid is 37.5 mb but its worth it.

I didn't do any speed runs, just kept it at 45 due to the slow car in front of me. There is a lot of trees and hill type areas on the street so I'd imagine even longer range on the freeway.

Hope this helps the infinite debate over v1 vs. escort.

Great post, man! I just got one of these as a gift and have been trying to decide if I want to use it or not. I don't usually speed much.

Glad you didn't wreck your car trying to hold the camera as you drove!

My friend has an escort x50 and I have the newest V1.

We mounted both on the window as close as possible and did many passes on a road similar to yours.

Result: They are very similar. The V1 went off maybe a half second sooner and held it second longer. The V1's range behind the car is better. But in front, its very similar. Overall, the V1's range might be a bit better. This was K-band so not sure about the other bands.
The V1's suction cups work better and doesn't bounce around when you're driving like you do with the escort.
And the arrows are super cool

I'm thinking about replacing my Cobra 9300 with an 8500. I think it's stupid that the blue one costs more. They also look so simplisticly lowtech.

They work, that's the point. I think the Beltronics one with the same internals has some colored covers you can put on it if your looking for style.

How is this supposed to settle the debate between the Escort and the V1? They both work. I have an Escort. It does a great job telling you that you are getting a ticket when cops turn their instant on radar guns on you... That's how I got my last 2 tickets.

On a recent road trip with a friend - him with a V1 and me with my 8500, we would seemingly take turns catching the Ka band first. All in all they were about equal as far as warning time.

You need to switch your 8500 into Pro mode, so you can track multiple radar signals at once.

I was thinking about that but I really don't know the benefit. If you're getting hit by one cop/highway patrol what's the point of tracking another?

It's not supposed to help any side, just showing the response time with the escort for those who havent seen it in action. Both V1 and Passport are great detectors. I was thinking about getting the V1 but couldn't bring myself to pay the extra cash for arrows. Plus the V1 doesn't have auto-mute. That is a feature I really like with the Passport.

No detector is fool proof, but it will help in most cases. If you get a laser..your screwed in any case. At least if there is a speed trap ahead you'll be safe.

I bought a blue x50 last week. I drove 1100 miles these past two days and it did an INCREDIBLe job of sniffing out radar speed traps.

This morning on I90 in ohio near toledo I was going ~90mph, missed a cop 3/4 of the way behind a concrete barrier, he clocked me twice with laser, he must have had a bad reading the first time because he said I was going 81. I at least had time to slam on my brakes for the second reading lol.

I ended up getting out of it which was awesome. I was in my "new" IS300 which is black with dark tint and my X50 was super visible. The cop was awesome, said not to rely on my radar, and gave me a written warning after doing his checks. He didn't hassle me for my tint either which is 4 days old.

morale of the story is detectors can only do so much. When used as tools they are great regardless of brand, but when you start to put 99% faith in them you will get burned like I almost did this morning. I doubt a V1 would have done much better in this situation because I was the only car on the road with a couple semis, I pulled over before he even had his lights on.

The point of putting it in advanced mode is so that you can see if you are being hit by more than just some false radar from speed signs, electric doors, etc.
