Default Good Head Unit for 2015 WRX

Guys,
Looking to upgrade my base wrx 2015 with a better head unit with a large display. the oem radio not only sounds terribly but also its a bit basic wanna have a screen plus get stereo benefits. Which good head units do you recommend? Been looking for other threads I thought I saw one about a pioneer head unit but can't find it. It does not need to have gps etc all the whistles but if it can have it for a good deal great. lets focus on bang for the buck not ultra high end pieces. also id like to have the option of all the subaru stuff working on it like the hands free or small oem lcd on the car. not sure what happens do song names still appear on the turbo gauge screen? thanks in advance

Pioneer AppRadio4. Still have all wheel controls, great bang for the buck, looks great, sounds great, songs no longer appear on the upper HUD (same with HK system, only base radio does that).

I have a base '16 and my biggest complaint is the head unit. Does the Pioneer unit have the same delay upon input as the stock unit does?

I don't think I have song titles appear on the HUD if I am reading your statement correctly.

The '16 has a completely different setup than the '15. The '15 uses the top screen for things that get moved down to the HU in '16, like the reverse camera, and apparently the song titles too.

There is a long thread about replacing the '16 HU. It's a PITA and not cheap to retain all the things the stock unit does. (But totally worth it if like me, you can't deal with how bad the factory bluetooth is).

These days everyone is doing tablet installs and the android source units they both include a lot of features and are cheap. Apparently the new Android units have steering wheel controls built in. The pumpkin ones and the eonon are what most are doing with good results. As far as sound quality goes on stock stereo that can be rectified with adding external crossover and amps and stuff you will keep added features from stock and gain better sound. You probably won't get the songs to come up with a aftermarket deck.

I installed a Pioneer AVIC 8000 NEX I bought off a member here. Couldn't be happier. Ran the mic to the factory location, so everything is clean looking.

Easy install since he had already wired everything up. Retained steering wheel controls and XM/Sirius with the adapters.

Did you install yourself? I'm interested for my 15 base but am not sure if I would wanna tackle the install or not.

Yep, installed myself with harnesses from ae64.com. If you have any experience with electronics, it's pretty straightforward.

I would probably go with a pioneer, they are great quality and are a good deal for the money.

The problem with those units is the hardware is junk. The failure rate is relatively high and if you care about any kind of audio quality and have an external amp, those units are not for you. All the ones that I have seen have 2V preouts, which is pitiful. In a noisy car like ours and with a weak signal, you will end up amplifying garbage. Currently, Brainiac iis showing some promise in the Android HU space as they are building a unit based on respectable hardware. Soon to go on sale, but it is in upper price range.

For now, stick to respectable brands that are known to work well: Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood Excelon.

I tried running the mic up to the stock location also but for whatever reason the stock microphone for my 8100NEX is not happy in that location. I ended up running it down with the wires connected to my homelink rear view system. If there was only a way to retain the factory microphone....
