Default Wooo, check out this twist of the Nigerian scam

I'm renting out the 3rd bedroom in my house in SD and have posted an ad in craigslist and I get a response from some person claiming to be a lady who will be coming to SD for 3 months on a business trip. Well, first warning was Africa (she never mentioned Nigeria til later). Here's our email convo:

So they actually called me... but the number they called me from looked like it was coming from the US. The area code was some 954 number, I think. I looked it up and it was Florida?

So I'm trying to gather up some info from this person. I've asked for her flight info multiple times but she seems to just ignore the question...

Hi Lynda,
Can you also please provide me with your flight information from Nigeria to
San Diego? What is the nature of the business you will be doing while you
are in San Diego? I'm trying to be extra careful with this as you may or
may not know, internet scams are plentiful coming from Nigeria. I don't
know what I can do about keeping the room available for you but I am still
here and I can help you with other things.

Do you know where you will be working while you are here in San Diego? Just
want to see whether my area will actually be good for you if you have to
commute.

Thanks,
Victor

So I email her saying we'll be withdrawing from the deal...

Lynda
So I was just waiting this long to see how they would get me to give them money from the excess amount they've provided.

Iíve received it but the money orders do not total to the amount we agreed upon.

Hey Victor,
So glad to read from you,the reason for the excess was that my boss sent the total amount that was budgetted for my trip including my basic travelling allowance which i will get from you when i get to US.

Lynda

So what should I do from here?

They're fake and that's why they want you to cash them, so you'll be the one who gets arrested.

Scammer comes back and says "Hey, sorry I can't make it to the apartment, please send me all my money back that you have cashed".

I say keep the checks for a while and then when they ask for their money back say you still have the checks because you never cashed them...

Exactly. They're fake checks and they want someone else to cash them. They have nothing to lose if one gets caught. If you have a freind who works in the credit department/finance part of the bank, have he/she look into it before you decide to cash them.

Or, just go to a bank and have them check their authenticity. Doesn't mean you have to cash them then and there. I don't see why a bank wouldn't do that, especially if you have one where you are a decent regular, have one or more accounts, etc...

Sounds good. But my only problem is, if they do find out that the checks are fake, won't it lead to a litany of questions and BS? Not to mention wasted time and inconvenience?

this sounds fishy
id go to the bank, ask to speak to a mngr. explain the situation that you have these checks but suspect them of being fake or what not. ask them what to do with them
if theyre golden, take money..
then run... and change email addy

It's a trap!!!

Actually, you should file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center. www.IC3.gov

What they do is aggregate all these types of complaints and take all the information that you have, and put it together with all the other information that other people provided to them. When they get enough information on a similar case and can point it to a specific bad guy, they package up the lead and send it to the local FBI office to take care of this.

Another thing you can do is call your local FBI office and talk to the duty agent for advice on what to do with those money orders. I can tell you 100% those damn things are fake. You know why they use FedEx? Because it's a crime to send them through the US Mail! Slick Bastards!
