Rally Stuff Tire width for gravel?

Time to start thinking about tires for next summer. I have a line on a set of 16x7 rims ('98 RS) and I know 205, 215 and 225's will all fit. My first inclination is to get 225's for the better tarmac traction, but I do quite a bit of spirited driving on gravel backroads.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with 225's on gravel?
Are the handling differences noticeable?

Depends on the surface. If you really mean loose gravel or marbles, a wide tire won't be much fun. If the surface is more like packed gravel and dirt, it'll work fine.

16 inch rally tires are extremely rare...and very expensive. The only brand that I know that makes 16 inch rally tires are Michelin.

Most 4wd rally cars here use a 215 to 225 width.

I'm not talking about competition tires. This is for my regular street tires, but that's an interesting thing to look at for comparison - the width of perfomance rally tires. I suppose aggressive tread pattern might compensate for the width though.

After checking my local rally tire supplier I can see that the widest gravel tire they carry is 215, but most are 175 to 205. My inclination now is to stick with 205's, as I really haven't had any issues with this size in the past.
