Those are skinny tires. If you are only going to run 225s why not save money and hassle and get 7.5 or 8 inch wheels.
As for the speedo difference... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html |

Yea the offset is perfect. But i would go with some 235/40/18 tires or bigger. You will not rub with the 235's not sure about any bigger.

actually 225/40-18 can and does fit a 9" wide wheel so, 8.5" is fine and the overall diameter is the same as a 225/45-17 so, there will no speedo difference

Sure they will fit, but if you only plan to run 225s, wouldnt 7.5 or 8 inch wheels be cheaper?

I would replace them with 245 35 18 when you get around to it.

I have the following set up with no rubbing:
18x8.5 ssr gt2 +48 (in gold btw) Tire size of 235/40/18 04 STi lowered with pinks Alignment is -1.5 in the fronts and -1 in the rears (recommended by andrewtech for daily (spirited)driving) You should have no problem rubbing with the relatively thinner 225's. Quote:

what tires are you running? Are you sure you won't have any rubbing with full suspension compression?

Pirelli Corsa 235/40/18. I got them from Myles at racecompengineering. I had the same set up as him before he got his coilovers. If I recall correctly, he had no rubbing issues with the pinks. It might be worth your while to PM him. BTW, this is the actual pic of my tires that Myles is using to sell his silver gt2's that have the same tires. Bad ass summer tires and effective in the wet. Can't wait till winter is over.
