Default Weird problem when I try to start my car

I just tried to start my car after it has been sitting for two weeks and discovered that it won't start. The first time I tried to start it the motor cranked twice then I got this clicking noise coming from what sounded like behind the dashboard somewhere. The noise sounds like a relay switch clicking on and off. After I tried to start it a second time, all I get is the clicking noise, the engine won't even crank. I know the battery charged. Also, I have the factory alarm system - is it possible that the ignition cutoff switch could be triggering itself somehow?

Can anyone figure out what might be happening?

Sounds like a classic case dead battery syndrome.

One time I accidently let my beater car run out of gas. When I tried starting it it made a clicking sound from the back like the one you described.

There's definitely plenty of gas in the car. I just went down to double check the battery and that actually might be the problem.

I thought the battery was ok because all the windows worked, the radio worked, etc. I don't know why, but I didn't check the headlights before. My brain is swiss cheese.

When you're out of gas, the starter will still crank. This batteries called it a day.

well, first of all, you shouldn't leave your car sitting for two weeks without starting it. every couple of days just start it up for like 5 minutes. but as far as not starting, maybe one of your connections to the battery is loose.

Question i have same problem but not all the time

i also have this same problem. except that it does start sometimes and sometimes it takes several tries. my car also stalls whenever it feels like it . I also have the factory alarm (dealer installed) , 2000 2.5rs, air intake and apex exhaust. the dealer says that there is nothing wrong with it, OK. yeah right. i'm in the same boat you are, i have also written to Denise Swartz the head of customer relations at Subaru of America with no response, go figure. any way some help would be greatly appreciated.

ghomer1 your 100% wrong. my car still starts but then stalls and will restart after waiting a few seconds. some sensor or something? i too have that same clicking from under the dash (driver side) only clicks when car won't start. wait a few seconds and stops clicking then starts right up. bad sensor or loose connection, i still have not figured this out.

Jeff,

Its the battery. I have a lot of experience with this, since my car tends to break every once in a while.

Borrow a charger from a friend or a near by shop. I don't recommend jumping it however, as I've heard it can be harmful to the computer.

Cheers,

MattC

i suspect your hearing an alarm relay clicking? maybe something is fishy with your alarm? do the lights flash when you hear the clicking?

Thumbs up

thanks mcdade. i too suspect that it has something to do with the alarm. (how do i disconnect this?) i only hear the clicking when the car wont start and when the car stalls suddenly (while driving at any speed, accelerating, deccelerating, wot, idling). Believe me my battery is not dead. I have a Optima yellow top along with alot of stereo equipment with numerous voltage gauges, 14.3V steady. But the car stalls ALOT. I've heard of the egr sensor gets ***** built up on it, but what about the clicking. Also heard of the atmospheric air adjustor or something like that that causes something like this but again what about the clicking? ANY HELP FROM THE TECHIES OUT THERE????
