Default Long commutes: Old vs. New Impreza. Thoughts?

Curious for those who have lived with both for a while, driving longish commutes. Which is better and why?

New is better, because it is just more fun.. Of coure, I am talking '94 Impreza L auto vs. 5 speed WRX, so it's kinda no contest.

My car is fine for long commutes, but the WRX is just so effortless and smooth compaired to it

Default That depends

I had a 5-spd '97 Impreza Outback Sport until February of this year (picked up my WRX in April). With the OBS, I had commuted at times, 1 hour+ each way everyday (modified intake and exhaust) the only issue I had was the fact that it wasn't fast enough I could only get it up to 115mph on 280 N/S

I did get better gas milage, but not that much and I could haul more with the wagon.

I recently moved and drove my WRX back and forth on a 6+ hour drive a few times and it was great! Fast, comfy, but damn I have to upgrade the crappy stock stereo

Are you just using it for a commuter car?
Are you going to be hauling anything to and from work?
Do you enjoy spirited drives?
What kind of routes are there between you and you destinations?

I think my ride looks better than a WRX, but the Rex def kicks its ass in handling power etc. But i also have some concerns about WRX pricing, seems like you get less than what you used to :-(

I'd think the WRX would be the better long-driver for one reason:

better seats!

The WRX has more luxury, but its is not really any more luxurious than any Impreza.. wait till you hop in a 2002 WRX when its 2008.. then we'll see how comfortable the seats are..

..as for handling..and seats being better now, I can change both on my RS

The new WRX is way better on long trips. The older version like mine isn't bad, but the new one has no wind noise. If someone disagrees let's trade cars so I can take the drive from NC to CO in a WRX.

on a 90mph trip back to orlando from tampa the other night, everyone fell alseep in my car...so i guess it's pretty comfy according to anyone who rides in it...

it's really nice on the highway now that i got my new pulleys put in...smooth as silk at 85+. i suppose the new ones are even better, but i have no complaints here.

I drive from Chicago to Peoria every week, and have been doing so for about a year. IT's a 2-3 hour drive depending on how fast you want to go and the time of day. My RS is very comfortable, but when you're at 85 and you need speed to pass a truck or get around someone slacking off in the left lane brfore they catch up to a truck in the right lane a quarter mile ahead, you really want more top end power. I'd say WRX, if only because on the highway you will have better acceleration when you're already moving. In the city, I'd take the RS because of the extra lowdown torque.

If you drive at night on open roads, look into better headlights (Morettes are nice for me), and some real fog/driving lights (Hella or Cibie).

Oh, and of course get a Valentine 1. No matter what you get, get one of those.

coming from a 97 obs 5 spd, the wrx is noticeably quieter which makes it less tiring over longer drives and i can enjoy the stereo more. plus those seats!

IMHO the WRX has much better lumbar support than the GC8 seats. Also the WRX seems much better "sealed", there's alot less wind noise.

The WRX seats are great. Much better than any other subaru seat I've sat in, including my outback's stock seats.

I've got a corbeau forza now and while it is better on long trips than the stock seat (for my screwed up back anyway) it lacks lumbar support. It does keep me quite snug around corners though.
