Default New sound, need some input.

Well on my usual drive to school today a horrible screetching came from the engine bay. I first heard this sound a few days ago when I first started it. It went away after a few seconds though. After that, it was clicking and sounded louder then usual. Apon inspection I noticed I was low on oil. I filled it and it helped a little. It sounds like it might be coming from my belts, but the belts are in good condition. The crank pully seems a little war-torn (teeth chipped a little, nothing that would cause a problem though), and I might have seen it vibrate a little.

Also, It might be unrelated, but my engine was whistling around 2800 rpm last week every-so-often.

I have a 94 impreza L wagon with a 1.8 liter and a 01 RS 5spd tranny + AWD components. It was originally a FWD automatic.

All suggestions and flames welcome.
Thanks,
Krypt

There is no lost of power or anything else that would queue me in to the problem either.

Check out the belts, and the bearings on the water pump or any other major components---If your bearings are shot they could seize--Is this a high mileage motor??

I dunno. Is 140k high? Yes, it is a high milage engine. It has also been pretty abused (that I know about) since about 120k. I'm going to check the bearings in the pully's as the belts seem in good condition. I just wanted to know if there is something I can't think of, or something that is usual for this engine that I don't know about.

My thought's are, best case: I change a pully. Worst case: I buy an engine.

Well, I checked the pullies, and there was nothing wrong with any of them. I ran the engine without any belts and it still screamed. I checked the teeth of the flywheel through the starter slot and no damege as it's new. The plastic cover on the front is cracked, but it wouldn't be making that kind of racket just from rubbing on something.

Is there anything else that I can check? Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. The noise is engine dependent in case I didn't mention it before.

Did you check the bearings on everything?

I spun all of the pullies that I could and they are fine. I ran it without belts and it still made the noise. I havn't ripped open the engine yet, just because I wouldn't know where to look first.

I took it to the mechanic today, and it ends up that it was the water pump gear on the timing belt. Not only that, the tensioner is out and the bearings are getting bad. The belt obviously needs to be replaced. So teh sucksorz for me. Anyone have these items?
