Default Boost Gauge Question

How loud should the boost gauge be? We (mostly Hondaslayer) just installed an Autometer boost gauge in my WRX today...under boost it sounds like I have a second turbo on the driver's side. Is this normal? At first I liked it, but now its getting somewhat annoying. Any comments? Thanks?

shouldn't make any sound.

if it does, you have a leak. that isn't a good thing. check all of your connections.

boost gauges are supposed to be silent! Maybe you got the boost gauge that has an integrated blow off valve or something?

if he tapped the vacuum hose thru the little opening above the pedals then thats where the sound is coming from, it doesnt have to be a leak.

I had this same problem, but then I just drilled a hole in the rubber cap thing that's originally over the hole, pushed the hose thru it and plugged it up and now no more "second turbo sound"

I have the same problem! I installed my VDO gauge and it reads boost perfectly (~9 psi in 1st, and 14psi in all other gear after 2nd). At high boost, it make a sound kinda like a sping rattling. It's not the gauge, because I removed the gauge and plugged the vacuum hose and it still made the noise. It sounds like the pulses from the turbo are just being amplified through the hose. My vacuum at idle is just under 20 in in Hg. Any more fixes? BTW, I routed the hose through the rubber gromet that is on the firewall.

TIA, -C

It's normal for the VDO boost gauges to rattle under boost. It's the spring inside of it. You need to place a filter inline to get rid of the noise.

wierd, because when I removed the gauge and capped the vacuum hose, it still made the noise at full boost. It's not a hissing sound at all. Maybe I'll buy another 6' of vacuum hose, run it in the car, and see if my original hose is bad. I don't think it's a leak though. Maybe the hose going into the firewall is pinched a bit and is vibrating against itself sort of like when you let air out of a balloon and pinch the opening.

any other suggestions?
