I autocross in a class (STU) that doesn't allow the direct modification of boost levels (boost changes from TBE and other allowed mods are permitted).
So, I'm debating whether I should get a Cobb AP or EcuTek (both would be Protuned maps). What kind of gains would I see with engine management if I couldn't touch the boost levels? Just so you guys know, my only modification is a TurboXS catted TBE and I drive an 05 STi.

Your options are basically adjusting timing only. I run in STX, and what i'd do is the following:
1) You are required to use pump gas, but that doesn't mean you are limited to 93 oct. Go find a pump that has 100+ octane. Fill up a 10 gallon tank with that. Get a siphon, and when you get to the event, suck out the gas in your take, and replace it with the 100+ oct. 2) Get a tune (using the AP probably, so you can swithc maps) that adds a bunch of timing. That will get you some extra power from the extra octane you added above. I'd expect you could see +10-15 HP, but more importantly, you will probably see a leftward shift of the torque curve. |

Depending on how the car is running, leaning out and adding timing are both options which could net you a few ponies. I'm not too sure how they can limit what boost modifications you can do if changes from supporting mods are permitted. If peak boost is the limiting factor then I'm sure you can pick up quite a bit tuning your car for your conditions and fuel without raising peak boost.

Well, the idea is that boost creep is allowed from a turbo back exhaust system. That's deviation from stock boost levels without having directly modified the boost levels.
However, actually changing boost through a boost controller or EM is illegal. It's all about staying honest, though. |
