Seems all Subaru shops are either out west or out east...Is there anyone in the MidWest that could help out on an swap or conversion? I hate to tackle something like that alone

there are a few shops, but none that specialize in just swaps.
contact P&L motorsports they may be able to help you. also if you are some what of a good wrench you could do all the mechanical labor your self and send out the wiring harness to get merged. |

I highly recommend Tim Sanderson. He had my engine out in a couple hours and worked some magic with my power steering lines and cruise control to make everything fit, then he even made me a custom radiator cover in his spare time! Plus he's an awesome guy
 If you need a hand with the wiring I wouldn't mind comming down for a weekend to help you out either. |
