Get someone to help you hold the wood (2x4)... align the ball of the shifter vertically w/ the top (threads). And wack it fairly hard dead center with yer hammer. Make sure the ball has a bit o grease on it. Should only take 2 or 3 tries... make sure you use WOOD and a big hammer w/a solid swing.

Good luck!

I've done 4 or 5 now and I've found I can get it with one or two good shots with a plastic dead hammer. Doing one on a WRX this weekend for a friend

Hammers? HAMMERS?

Ignore anyone who tells you to use a hammer...

I know you are done already, but for future reference: Screw the shift knob on to the new shifter, set it in the socket, make sure it is alighned straight, and POP the top of the shiftball with the heel of your hand.

I've swapped mine several times, and my wife's RS once... never had to give it more than two good whacks, and you dont have to worry about woodchips in your car...

Palms o steel, eh? Guess that'd work with the shift nob back on... should've tried that before pulling out a hammer. All the destructions I found listed a hammer in the "tools required". Atleast he got it in... eventually. Definately should only take 1-2 swings, palm or hammer.
