what school you going to?

check out thinkpads. Very good college computer because they're very durable. Also Dell is a good choice for colleges because everyone has one and they have great service and support for educational buyers.

Apples are alright, the iBook is win but I don't have good stories to tell about the Powerbooks as far as durability goes. For what they cost they ought to be better (just my opinion).

What program will you be in? What will you be doing? Do you need to run any special software? If you're in a media program (film, photo, graphics) you will want plenty of RAM and storage space. Do you have engineering software to use?

You haven't provided much info. Also why do you want a laptop? Desktops offer more upgrade options and better longevity.

And finally if you get a laptop I strongly urge getting an external 3.5" hard drive for data backups since in my experience laptop hard drives will quite often die within 18 months if you use them a lot.*

*the exception to this being traditionally the Thinkpads which have had active hard drive protection features built in for years. Apple has added them within the last year or so and now they should offer some similar benefits in that regard. I'd still rather drop a thinkpad than an Apple although I'd prefer to not drop any laptop. Unfortunately these don't help with heat and heat is a big killer of laptop hard drives. Don't use it or leave it running in any kind of case if you can help it. That's bad first because heat cannot escape and second because you're just shaking the poor hard drive around while it's running if you're walking around with a running laptop in your backpack.

I don't think you should go to 512mb of RAM simply because that's the bare minimum I'd want to run a modern Windows or Mac OS on. 1GB is a good amount to go with, you can always upgrade it later but if you ever surprise yourself by actually using your laptop (heehee) you won't be hurting from not having enough ram. 1GB is a good place to be IMO.

Also will you be able to get educational discounts right now? All the major makers of computers should have educational pricing on their equipment. Dell will usually have a better deal if you wait for coupons and if you don't need this yet wait and see if you can get something like a Dell 700m with big coupons. I've seen them have $750 off a $1500 computer and that's with an operating system. To legally get an OS for that gateway might cost you a fair amount unless your school has good pricing on that (my college has Windows XP for $4.50).

Doesn't look like it comes with a warranty and I know nothing about the one they offer to sell in the auction.

If your budget is really $750 you'd be better off with a desktop honestly.

Not recently, nor have I kept up with their recent coupons. Just google "dell coupons" and you'll see tons of sites that list the current Dell deals. There might be a better site to look at but I don't know which.

If you find a good deal on it I certainly recommend the 700m. Surprisingly well built and a nice formfactor.

Upgrading it will be tough. How old is it/what is it? If you have one and it's not too old you're better off with getting a new desktop for your budget IMO.
