Default methanol

Just bought a meth injection kit.
Any one know a good place to get methanol?
Online or a type of store that would stock it?

You can buy methanol at any major hardware store in gallon quantities, about $10.00 /gal.

If you buy fuel methanol from a racing fuel supplier you will pay about $2.25/gal.

There are several racing classes that use methanol fuel, dig out your phone book yellow pages and look for speed shops that cater to the circle track or drag race folks and you will probably find a source of fuel methanol.

I know in MA most hardware stores don't carry meth. But the paint stores do.

me and a couple of my friends bought a 55 gallon drum for around 175.00 the key thing there was telling the distrubuter that we were using it make our own washer fluid if you tell them your using it for fuel then all sorts of taxes bump the price up a hell of alot, we did this back in the spring and still have about 15 to 20 gallons or so left roughly.

BTW, I just thought I should add one more thing.

Methanol is highly corrosive, and carcinogenic. It needs to be handled and stored with great care. Make sure you have a safe place to store it, and it would be wise to take safety precautions before pouring it.

And it likes to absorb water (hygroscopic... I thought it was hydroscopic... but there is no such word. hygroscopic means
1 : readily taking up and retaining moisture
2 : taken up and retained under some conditions of humidity and temperature)

But methanol should be stored up off the ground, say a pallet, and needs to be stored in a solid color, not clear. It needs to stay away from the sun at all times, and it does like to suck in the water.

At my previous shop, we had to dump quite-a-few gallons because they were tainted w/ water.
Methanol is very, very corrosive. It ate thru anodized AN fittings in no time. It needs constant maintenance to keep the corrosion down.

When we ran it in our drag Honda, 8 x 1800cc injectors, the menthanol ate thru all the anodized fuel rails and AN fittings.
According to other experts in racing.... ethanol is less corrosive and has a less consumption for proper air/fuel mixture than methanol (using lambda values only, you really cannot tune w/ a stadard wide band. I think we were at 6.2 to 1 air/fuel ratio on an Autronic Wideband which meant a 11.5 air/fuel ratio in lambda values.

We could buy a drum for around $80, $1.60 a gallon, better than paying $6 a gallon for C16 and only making 70 percent of the power.

Anyway, it's fun stuff

I get mine local from World Wide Racing Fuels

Like the others have said, storing this stuff requires attention.

I left in contact with aluminum in large quantities, it will start corroding the aluminum, and the byproduct is hydrogen gas.

Isn't common winter washerfluid about 40% methanol, and the rest water with some soap? These things are stored in clear plastic bottles, and sit on shelves in practically every store, from supermarkets to auto parts stores...

question: So can't we cut the methonal with water 50/50, and then store it safely? In say those solvent type cans, which help to keep moisture out, and from allowing the meth to evaporate?

3 different states, not one of them has Methanol in ANY hardware store.

MA
PA
TX

No meth in the HW stores.

Fuel oil supply places carry it sometimes though.

Yep.

But also look at what else is put out in the open, drain cleaners, bleach, ATF & brake fluid. Shoot, yah can get cans of toluene & paint thinners that are more hazardous to your health. Just look at the warning and handle everything appropriately.

Whoops, I thought I remembered reading that.

For a very exhaustive review of pump gas and other gasoline additives, check out the gasoline FAQ:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/autos/gasol.../preamble.html

Part 4 specifically addresses common fuel additives like ethanol, methanol, propylene oxide, and nitromethane.
