copied from speed.

Filming at Speed: The Making of the Movie 'Le Mans'
During the closest finish in Le Mans racing history in 1969, star Steve McQueen was in the stands. A racer in his own right, McQueen had a plan brewing - make a film that brings the audience closer to this race, this excitement, this feeling of being at the track, than any had ever done before. No easy task. But by rigging cars with cameras as never before, McQueen's Solar Productions did just that, putting one of these cars in the race itself the very next year. The result is the movie Le Mans.
Marking the film's thirtieth anniversary, son Chad McQueen grants an inside look at the filming of Le Mans, one of the greatest racing movies ever made.

I wonder if they will mention that McQueen was on a coked-out ego trip the entire shoot. And how he was scared the real drivers would find out and refuse to go ontrack with him.

And how he had no script or even treatment and was just going out and shooting random footage. All the pros were all

His plan was to develop the story in post-production, which is what he did.

He was just CERTAIN the Wyer Gulf cars would win. It sort of screwed up the movie when they didn't.

That movie really shows how horribly the early 917s handled. They are all over the track on braking. The Ferarris totally owned the Porsches in the corners and on braking. The only advantage for Porsche was the cheater extra 2 liters. Of course it wasn't "technically" cheating but it was certainly against the intent of the rules.

so where does this little bit of info about McQueens alledged drug problem come from?

I know his son Chad recently took a pretty heavy shunt at Daytona while testing for this weekends race. He did recieve injuuries and did spend time in hospital and is not racing the Rolex24.
