Default P0065

Hi,

2002 Impreza, 2.5L, w/ 40,000mi warranty is up
CEL light on, took it in. P0065.

1 post said its a false code and they sent the ECU in to Subaru for flash
another said it was dirty and they cleaned it themselves but light keeps coming back
another said the dealer replaced it under warranty.

He charged 120$ to read the codes and will charge 500$ to fix. I'm not that familiar with working on this car, but I would like to try and fix it myself and save some money. I know these guys rip you off.

1-How does this part affect engine performance?
2-Is it hard for an inexperienced person to fix?
3-What is the fix? part#'s etc.

I have a co-worker that can probably help me if it gets complicated.

Any help/opinions are much appreciated.

Thanks
Ken

Do you know whether or not your car ever was fixed under the WWF-89 Service Campaign? The campaign was to correct bad logic in the ECU for the front A/F sensor. The fix was a dealer-performed reflash using a special Subaru Select Monitor cartridge designed just for that Service Campaign. That WWF-89 reflash was cummulative, meaning that all fixes from older reflashes were incorporated in the WWF-89 reflashes. One of those older fixes for the 2002 2.5L Impreza fixed a P0065 problem.

If you don't know whether your car was ever fixed under WWF-89, call 1-800-SUBARU3 and have your VIN handy. If they say your car never got the WWF-89 reflash, then take your car back to the dealer and get the reflash done free. In this case, I'd also ask the dealer to refund the earlier diagnosis fee, because if he'd simply called Subaru's Techline he could have found out the same information I'm telling you. If they balk, then explain that a routine part of any service should be to check for any outstanding recalls and campaigns on your car and that you intend to file a complaint with SOA.

You could have spent 30 seconds on Google instead of bumping a 10-year-old thread.

Well I quit my posh Mod job here and got busy doing stuff in the real world for a while. Now I'm married with a kid and I'm back.
