I have a 2002 wrx and my utec has been tuned by jorge at p&l motorsports. I took my car in to get the timing belts done and they took the battery out. This will reset my utec right? All maps will be lost. I have the tuned map saved onto my laptop incase something like this happened. The 9v battery was not in when this happend so there was no power going to the utec at this time. My question is how do I load the map back on to my utec off of my laptop? I was told go to Hyperterminal then select utec. After that scroll down till I see the map that was tuned and select send to utec from pc. Next send the parameter map to the utec as well. Is that how it works. Any help would be great. Thanks

Disconnecting the battery won't delete the maps.

oh it won't? Wow that is good news. So I can connect my battery and just drive away? Why wouldn't it lose the map? It has not power to the utec. I thought that would lose the tuned map. Is it kind of stored in a hard drive like a computer? I'm so confused. lol

I believe its stored on a flash based ROM style memory (sorta like what is in a USB drive)...
But don't quote me on that. I had another friend who though if you got an ecutek flash that it would be lost if the battery was disconnected or died... I wanna know who is spreading this information around so I can kick them in the balls... |

Yeah I hope its not lost..I was told by a shop around by me. I will let me car warm up and check it tomorrow after they are finished. I should be able to log into my utec before I start the car and it should say the existing maps that are still being used. I will let you guys know what happens.

I've had my battery disconnected after utec install.. Installed fuel injectors, spark plugs, ect... other things that are in the way of the battery...
The maps were not lost - so you WILL be fine unless someone else got in there and screwed with your utec. Hell for awhile I was clearing my check engine light thrown by the removal of my cat (new downpipe) by disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU... And instead of just starting your car and driving away - I'd let it warm up fully and if everything sounds fine look at the data... Make sure they didn't screw up the timng buy getting a cam 1 tooth off or something stupid |

Also remember that your stock ECU has to relearn now after a battery disconnect. So take things easy until it's all settled down! When you load a map into the UTEC it's stored in non volatile memory so a battery disconnect wont affect maps, parameters or firmware.

This is making my day a lot easier. Very help full information.
Entropy138: I didn't mean to say just drive away. lol That came out wrong. I always let the car warm up for 5-10 mins in the winter just so the oil gets moving since its so cold...I will check the map though just in case. Thanks for correcting me on that one ![]() |
