Default 01' 2.2 engine in 98 2.5L Legacy?

My 98 legacy 2.5GT needs a new engine as the piston rod bearings have gone out and I've already dealt with the headgaskets and don't want to put another 2.5 back in. I found an EJ22 out of a 2001 Impreza Sport and I was wondering if it would bolt up to the transmission of my 98 and be compatible. I am in desperate need to get my Legacy running again as it's my daily driver and I can't afford to pay a shop to do the work. With the entire engine assembly I was wondering if I could just take my engine out and just bolt this one up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

think the best way to go is get the single cam 2.5 put your heads on that block
im building a lot of 2.5 norm aspr blocks but you can find the 2.5 single cam engines

Q: "Can I put a <insert engine here> into my <insert Subaru here>?"
A: Subaru has a high interchangability rate as far as drivetrain components go. If your car came with an EJ series engine, then any other EJ series engine will "drop" into your chassis. I say "drop" because while they do share the same engine mounts, some other components may be required to change first before the engine can go in. Think Legos.

I have an MY97 2.5 DOHC with a Phase II short block that has about 40k on the block. It's coming out of my car in the next few days and will be available for sale. This will drop right in with no modifications or wiring issues. It currently has a turbo on it but compression checks are good. Drop me a pm if your interested.

simply put, you can do it, and it will run good, not perfect, but good. putting the 2.5 engine sensors on the other engine may help this, (or atleast make sure they are the same)
