Default Rumor: BMW 335i

Some of you know there has been some rumor about the possible 3 series with turbo charged gas engine for a while now. In fact, it has been pretty much unofficially confirmed that Europe will in fact get the turbo charged version of the new N52 engine. (dubbed N54?) The speculation was that the current N52 will be slightly detuned and replace the current 325i, and the 335i will replace the 330i to fight back the IS350 and the upcoming Infiniti.

Well, I just read on Bimmerfest that BMW has developed a new 3.5L N/A engine just for the North American market. Because the current 3.0L N52 is very compact with no room to bore out, they went through the extra trouble of actually redesigning the block. All because the American "focus group" rejected the idea of the F/I bimmer.

If interested, read on here.

BTW, the guy who posted "breaking news" has been having a pissing match with another guy, claiming that there was no way BMW will develop a 3.5L N/A engine for the states. Now that two people with supposedly "inside" source claim this unlikely scenario, it seems truer.

E92/3, engines:

323i = N52
325i = N52 & N53
330i = N52 & N53
330d = M57
335d = M57
335i = N54 (225kW = 306HP)
335si = N54 (245kW = 333HP) - with ZSG gearbox!!!

xDrive will be also available on specific models - a bit later.

No more "Ci" & "Cd" label, but only "i", "d" & "si" instead.

It is possible some markets (e.g. US) get different designations: e.g. 328i instead of 330i, 323i instead of 325i etc.

N53 engines only for Europe, not US. He said no power change over N52.

So I guess US will still have N52 engines & later this year also a N51.

PR coming mid February.

Legend:
N52 - current I6 2.5L & 30L engines
N53 - 2.5L & 3.0L engines with DI
N54 - 3.0L variable twin turbo
N51 - 2.5L SULEV II engine

Seems like this is needed with Infiniti and Lexus offering 280+ hp engines in their compact sports sedans.

But it'll cost more than an M45 at that point. A 330 already starts several grand over an IS350 or G35. I guess this'll help sell to those who really want a Beemer but were previously turned off by weak engines, but not price.

Lexus just got in gear themselves moving from the rather weak 215hp I6 to the new 2.5 and 3.5 direction injection motors. The G35 has been available with 260+hp and optional and affordable AWD for several years. I don't think the G35 is as nice as either the IS or 3-series, but it is also a crapload cheaper. I myself shopped a G35 sedan. The 6MT starts at barely over 30k, is still very nice, and has 298hp and a 6 speed.

I still don't get Nissans pricing, an Altima SE-R is more than a base G35. Hmm, Altima or G35...

Yep, I apologize for spreading misinformation. Apparently two idiots on that sub-standard forum intentionally misled people to have some fun.

So forget about North America specific N/A 3.5L, or the claim that 325/330 line up will be replaced by 328/335. What still remains likely is that I-6 turbo is being tested by BMW, and is very likely to debut on the 3-series in a year or two.

Again, I apologize for the misinfo.
