Question '91 Legacy 2wd, Should I buy?

Hey guys,
Long time no talk. Sorry for being away for a while. I'm looking at some used cars for commuting. Here is my question... Should I buy a '91 FWD Legacy with 128K miles? It's tempting @ $1000 asking price (figure I can get it for $700 or $800) Is there anything I should be warry about? Would it be possible to convert it over to AWD? Thanks for the input.

Mike, I've got a MY91 Legacy L+ wagon w/FWD & MT5 that I'm selling when my MY00 GT wagon arrives. Non-maintenance items I've had to replace the power window motors. At 60K mi, my rear struts are shot but this might be normal; check them. The AC compressor is occasionally fussy at the start of the summer but once engaged cools fine.

The timing belt needs to be replaced every 60K miles. If owner didn't replace it at 120K, you'll want to do that. According to posts I've read, the sun visors of this era lose the ability to remain in the folded-up position; there's a visor replacement/fix that someone sells for around $40 (sorry, forgot the site). I haven't had the visor problem. Also check the CV boots; the DIY "zippered" boots don't last as long as those without.

FWD works fine for me & wife in the snow in DC (infrequent) and upstate NY (lots) but certainly AWD has advantages. Haven't heard of anyone converting from FWD to AWD but and don't know if it's possible.

Does it have ABS?

Per Consumer Reports, the early (MY90-91) Legacy's weren't the most reliable. My repair experience has been almost equal to that reported in the CR frequency-of-repair tables for the MY91.

Also try searching/posting on Billy Clement's The Ultimate Subaru Message Board; it's a frequented by back yard mechanics.

Good luck.

How much are you looking to get for your current ride? I'm in the market but don't want to spend too much on a commuter car.

It would be a pretty big and costly job to convert from FWD to AWD, even if possible. Spending large amounts on an old Subaru is not particularly cost effective.

I would suggest a good set of winter snow tires for the bad months, some good all-seasons for the rest of the year, and you should be able to get around pretty well. A set of Arctic Alpins would get you around nicely in winter unless you have some really steep hills to negotiate.

Hi John, I've been reading your useful advice on alt.autos.subarus and Edmund's for quite some time. I never thanked you for your posts (I was lurking) but I would like to thank you for regularly sharing helpful info with others.

Mike, I hope I wasn't misleading. I wasn't trying to sell you my car, just trying to give you examples of repair from an owner of the same vintage. But since you asked Jeez, I dunno, though gotta admit, I'd rather sell to it someone on this board than to a complete stranger or someone that's not into a Subes. I was hoping to get somewhere in the range of Kelly Blue Book ($5,335) but I'm probably living in a fantasy. It's got new tires and muffler. I'd have to look up when the brakes were last done but when I had them inspected in August, Meineke said at least 40K mi more (take that with a grain of salt).

Here are the specs:

Subaru Legacy L+ wagon, 2.2L, MT5, FWD, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Tilt Wheel, Cruise Control, AM/FM Stereo Cassette, ABS (4-Wheel), Roof Rack.

Please email me if you'd like more info so I don't bore everyone else to tears.

Thanks for the inquiry.

Mike,
Thanks for the offer, didn't realize it would be that much $. I was looking to spend in the $1500-$2000 range. Good luck with the new car. I can't wait to get a new Legacy myself, hopfully it'll be the GT or GT Limited.

Mike Smith... I am looking for a car for my wife, and this sounds worth looking into. You don't have a picture by chance do you? Feel free to E-mail me.
