Default STi longblock in 2002 WRX

I am now going to try another swap on my wrx, this time a lognblock USDM STi engine into my 02 wrx. I have spoken with Phil at element about using a hyrda to run it, as I want the active heads. He said I would need some ver. 7 cam gears, drill and tap the head for the wrx sensor, and run a few wires for the heads. My main questions are, anyone here done this yet, and do I need all four JDM cam gears for it to work?
ThankS
MCL

Man im in the same position as you. What is a hydra? I have no clue what you are talking about. Active heads??!!

I have to find out ALL the information about swapping an STi engine into my 02 Rex. Different engine harnesses? Different engine tuning? Different engine mounts? Different engine mounting points??!!

The engine for an STi is made to work with a 6 speed tranny, will it work with a 5 speed? What kind of effects does it have when you run a 5 speed with an STi motor?! I have no idea! I need help!!!

To answer most of you questions the STi engine has the same mounting points(engine/trans) as a WRX engine, so it drops in place and will mate up to the wrx 5 speed. You will want to look into getting a stronger trans for sure. I'm not sure as to if the harnesses are different as I am using my WRX intake manifold/wiring/fuel setup because I already have over a grand into that. I am guessing they may differ a bit, but I haven't done pinouts of both. The engine tuning however is different as the STi heads have AVCS (active heads). I was running a Link ECU, but now I am moving to a hydra ECU so I can control the AVCS also. I guess I will just have to spend more time speaking with Phil next week when he gets back.

sti motor will not bolt up. the 6 speed motor is 11 x as strong mounting as the 5 speed. i repeat, it only bolts up to FWD automatic gearbox from 1991 legacy.

ok. to address the post, if you wish to run a sti longblock, you would be better off putting in a JDM 207. much easier to have in and have avcs working, if you have a displacement complex, and 320 hp stock dosnt make you feel manly, then just swap bottom ends to a 257 shortblock.

hydra will cost you up the butt. so will wigging out with cams and such. screw that, get the better 2 liter head and swap the cheap end- the shortblock, not make some franken top head business.

why the heck would guy at random shop try to convince to to rig the usdm sti head when im sure he knows that a jdm would be much easier? just make sure you arnt getting scammed....

If the STi motor doesn't bolt up to a wrx gear box, how are people running STi gearboxes on WRX engines? I have already had a STi Short block bolted up to my trans, so I know for a fact it works.
Also Element isn't some random shop, they are a vendor here and have a good name around here.

ThankS Bret, as will any EJ engine bolt up to a WRX 5 speed.
You have any master tech help for my problem? I know last time we spoke you were not too sure if I can get it going easily. I still need to pass emissions then I will get to do yet another engine swap, and work this problem out.

you need an sti wiring harness, otherwise the setup will be.....more than difficult.

SubeTek is correct, ej series motors and tranny's all are interchangeable.

pending your budget, i would shoot for some jdm heads, keep in mind that jdm v.7 cams are WORSE than usdm wrx cams (somebody correct me if i am wrong on this, but i am 99% sure) for top end power... so swapping in v7 might not be the best way to go....v.8 or better cams however....would be nice.

although.....i would think the 1800 you spend on v.8 heads would be less than all of the work you are looking to do..... thats what im doing....

I can't remember who it is, but one of the vendors here does make a harness that uses the USDM wrx harness and plugs into a JDM ecu.
