Default Solstice Knocks Miata off the Podium

For the First time in 16 years, the Mazda MX-5 Miata isn't the world's top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster. That Honor has gone to Pontiac's new Solstice. This occurred just as the Miata has knocked off British Leyland's venerable MGB, produced from 1962 to 1980, as the most popular roadster ever with more than 700,000 built

For.. err *cough* Mazda just needs to remove the vagina from the Miata and I'd take one over a Solstice or Sky.

Default Not surprised at this at all!

I have a 1995 base Miata with the 8 PSI Supercharger. It has power steering and that's it, you could not get it without. No electric windows, no electric mirrors, no ABS. This is a pure sports car, well as pure as you can get besides the R Model. I did have to add the limited slip, tubular roll bars, and the KYB AGX 8 way adjustable shocks, because I really wanted the R Miata. But, I do keep up with the R's in the corners, the straights are a different story

I was just at the Mazda dealer to get some exhaust hangers when I thought I would let my 3 1/2 year old son sit in the RX-8, we were going to sit in the MX-5, but it was an automatic with Leather seats . The MX-5 is going the same way as the RX-7, and the 300ZX, and the Supra, and 3000GT,ect.... The MX-5 in the showroom had electric everything, it even had radio controls on the steering wheel. When you see that the car is doomed.

So, I'm not surprised that the Solstice is ahead of the MX-5. Mazda is going in the wrong direction IMHO. But then again, when Mazda give the option for a “Track” model it did not sell very well. I guess we do it to ourselves. Mazda needs a Basic with a 200 HP or so turbo, and people will buy.

My $.02 worth,
David

Almost everyone I have talked to who had driven the new Miata, we all agree thay have numbed the car quite a bit. It doesn't weigh much more than the previous model, but it sure feels like it does. It isn't as connected as the NA and NB models either.

Despite the refinements, I will keep my S/C NA model for now. I will re-evaluate when the new From-the-dealer Spec Miata model shows up or the new Mazdaspeed.

I'm very surprised to hear that, since the press was very favorable to the new gen praising how it's truer to the its root than the previous gen. I guess I can only hope to drive it myself one day.

Ya and in a few years when it's really good they will kill it off.

A brief lesson in GM history. Corvair, Fiero, Reatta, Allante, Camaro, Firebird and for that matter the entire Oldsmobile division. Of course in the end, Olds was anything but good unless you liked a bland FWD V6 version of a Cutlass.

I've seen 2 of the new miata's, and no solstice's. And we have a pontiac dealership but no mazda dealership.

I'll make my decision once i test drive a saturn sky... and a miata for that matter... any miata... i'm 6' and have always wondered if i'll fit in one.

You also have to consider this: The miata has been around for a while. People have seen them. A new body is nothing *too* special. (especially if it's dumbed-down). The solstice on the other hand is brand spankin new, never been seen, and therefore doesn't have legions of enthusiasts who already have one and wont go out and buy the new one.

You can't just post that, and not give us a complete run-down of the car.
I have seen one at a dealer (from afar) but don't know anyone that actually has one. I think all of NASIOC demands a full and thorough review of the car - including pics.

That's why you gotta get in in the begining - get them before they get neutered for the American public.
