Post I have my GT now what do I do.

My GT is 1 week old and o' what fun! Bill Lay at Tacoma Subaru told me about this web.(I highly recommend him and buying via CarPoint. 1.5% over and no hassles!!) This web is great. I have learned quite bit about my new car.

I've never done much in the way of mods on my other cars, but I think I'd like to do a few on this guy. What mods are a good starting point/most bang for the buck? Intake and pulley looked like canidates.

Cool

Hey, another Legacy!!! Well, it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. It doesn't sound like you want to spend too much on mods. I would say go for the pulley (I just installed mine last week, it does help. If you come to the next get together I can show you how much the stock one weighs) and intake and exhaust. Now some people are saying if you put the intake on the car is running lean and a fuel pressure riser or the Super Air Flow Controller from Apex-i is needed. (I got the Apex-i one and should have it installed soon) We should be meeting on the 19th or so to go do some Karting! You should come, it is really fun!

DOPE!

Tacoma Subaru rocks. I got mine for $200 over invoice, and that was their *first* offer.

Um, I personally am hesitant about the UD pully and the intakes, and am going to hold off for a while on those. I am too paranoid and want to see what pans out with everyone that has those... besides, I need my money for a wedding (ugh, and christmas) right now.

Unhappy

I'm bummed out. The best I got was 4% over invoice for my GT wagon down here in the Bay Area. I'm just not good at haggling.

I'm thinking about the Amsoil filter I saw on Draken Parts' site. I don't want to mess with the intake since it looks like it already has a decent cold air intake. Does anyone have experience with the Amsoil?

Wink

Go for Intake or Exhaust first!! start boostin up the HP's!!! Of course I did tint and stickers first... j/k!!!

Actually, my first mod was the exhaust. It just depends on the $ you have to spend. If you don't have a whole lot to start with, then intake would be my first choice.

Come out and meet us on the 19th!! It's too much fun!

Since you just got your car, I'm assuming it's a 2K. If it's a '99, everything I've said below definitely applies, for the 2K I don't really know.

There are still very mixed signals on whether or not intake and exhaust will provide any appreciable horsepower gains. At first people said they didn't, now they say an intake will give you 15hp. I wanna see some 1/4mi times before I believe it.

Exhaust is worth replacing just because the stock one sounds so weak. I haven't done mine yet because there's nobody around here to listen to (I don't want to buy something without hearing it first, ya know?).

Do you want to do something easy that will no doubt improve the cars performance? Get an 18mm rear anti-roll bar - I'm assuming these are available for the 2K models, if not I'm sure they will be soon. Check out www.spdusa.com - SPD is pretty good for parts. Anyway, the bigger rear sway bar reduces the car's tendency to understeer - it is noticeable even in regular driving (ie taking an on-ramp at a reasonable speed). Only took me about 20min to install mine, and it is more than worth the money.

Another quick, easy (and free) mod is to remove the intake air silencer. I don't know how the 2K's intake is routed, but the '99s goes from the MAF sensor into the filter box which sucks through the silencer located inside the fender. I had to remove the passenger side front wheel and pull the plastic fender liner partially out to get the silencer out. Theoretically it should give the car more power, but you'll never notice. You will notice a nice growl under acceleration - mine kicks in about 4k RPM. My exhaust may still sound wimpy, but the engine sounds a bit better, so I'm making progress.

Anyway, those are my two initial suggestions. Good luck.

For 2K GT, you can not remove the silencer without replacing the entire plumbing.
The car is pretty much set up as a cold air induction, drawing air directly from front.
The air doesn't have to travel through the silencer box in order to reach the throttle body. Air can go directly toward the filter then throttle body.

If you like handling, then get the rear sway bar. If you like acceleration, then get the pulley. If you like negative acceleration (braking) then get the Mintex brake pad.

Another happy TNS onwer! What do you want to do? Go faster or handle?
Fast, Take out the silencer cambers and run a hose from the air box to the scoop on the core support. Replace the rear muffler with something that flows better. Replace the trans and engine mounts.(also stiffens the crossmember, added bonus!)
Handling, TIRES!! No rear bar as yet but one may be in the works I,m still looking. Strut bar helps. Big brakes from the STI do fit and are great. PS adjust the pedal rod a freebee. I'm sure there more I just can't think of them right now but I think that will keep you busy for now have fun and spend big.
