Default Quick Question about Windows XP and Hard Disk Space

OK, well I was down to 10gb free on my 74gb Raptor. Well, I managed to free up 12gb more by clearing out old restore points, deleting some old programs, and deleting all of my music.

The problem is, now I have 50gb of stuff on the drive without a clue where most of the stuff is. I only have about 1gb of pictures, no music, and no videos. I used WinCleaner OneClick Cleanup 9 to help get rid of some of the clutter. This cleaned out my temp files, registry, invalid shortcuts, etc.

Any thoughts on where the usual culprits are? Unix is so much simpler.

Ah, I forgot to check Outlook. I have like 1,200 messages in my inbox. Time to go cleaning tonight!

why dcmomentum no .pst file on another drive? and 1200 messages probably is taking up VERY little space.

My archive of mail for the last two years is 150mb.

use the disk cleanup utility, it will empty out your temp internet files, temp program files, etc.

Nice, that's exactly what I need. I keep my external hdd off when I'm not ghosting to it, so I don't use it for active storage.

I am sure your swap file is a couple of GBs in size.
Also if you use FireFox, I believe it keeps it's tempfiles someplace other than where IE keeps it, so you'll have to find that and delete it.
If you run any kind of torrent application, people usually forget that they have many GBs of downloaded files there.

And here, I asked about a registry cleaner (and overall Windows cleaner) a while ago... ran both CCleaner and RegCleaner, and they found many GBs of useless crap that I coudl free up.

Yes, torrent files. I forgot about those too.

Having just 1 74GB raptor doesn't seem like the best idea to me. I have my OS and program files on 1 drive, my games and swapfile on my raptor, and my mp3s, other media and archived data on yet another drive.

^^ good point - I picked up a 300GB HD at Staples for like $150 a few months ago. Keeping your PC clean is all well and good, but when space is this cheap, no reason to delete stuff like your music.

I am a little more anal about disk space.

I have a raid 0 array, 120GB in size. I have a 40GB drive that I back up my data from the array to weekly. My server has a 250GB raid 1 array and ~120GB in other non protected space. Backups are moved up there monthly.

Yeah, but I don't really have any media, and I delete mp3s after about a month. I listen to mostly streaming audio. Or, I'll record the stream, burn it, and delete the file. I don't have any videos either.

I've had it for a year and a half, and only have 50gb on it. I bought a 320gb WD external hdd for ghosting and other backup purposes.

I'm just really anal about having unused files on my PC. All my old music was converted from CD to mp3, then backed up to DVDs.

Nice app! Now that I used that, I was able to see that a ton of old Fraps files were hogging the space. I deleted all of those, and uninstalled Half Life 2. After doing that, I went to 31/74gb used. Now I have like 40gb free, which is more than enough.

Time to defrag...
