New Rivals for my 2K Legacy GT

Just got my 2K Legacy GT sedan last Wed, and I didn't drive much till this weekend. And Friday nite, I was cruising down the freeway, a new Acura TL pulled next to me, checked me out and then downshifted couple times before he finally left me alone.

Sat nite, same story, except this time it's a Lexus GS300.

Sun nite, same stuff, this time Mercedes C280.

The point? When I had the 98 Legacy GT, I used to have Accords, Tegs, Eclipse reved on me. But the 2K Legacy sure look much more upscale then the old one. I bet those guys didn't even know it's a Subaru they wanted to run with.

I only had 500mi on my car, so don't call me a wimp. :-)

Interesting. I've got a MY00 GT on order but it's a wagon so I doubt I'll have that "trouble".

I haven't had anybody try to race me yet. Maybe they got spanked by subarus in the rain too many times.

I did have some teenagers in some POS next to me on night and they were doing the inching forward thing so I thought they wanted to race. Ok so I play it cool until the light turns green and then left them in my water spray! haha

The Liberty (OZ market Legacy) seems not to attract the kind of attention warranted by its smaller brethren, but I cop occasional grief from BMW/Audi drivers and the odd taxicab, especially after it's just been washed

. Although Oz Legacies are down on power due presumably to conservative tuning for jungle-juice petrol, the ability to stick full power down out of almost any bend never ceases to amaze *me*, let alone my would-be opponent...

Andy, Forgive me but I'm not up on the term "jungle-juice petrol". Are you saying your petrol is inferior to that in other countries? Many on i Club complain that US petrol is of inferior in quality (or maybe it's just octane) to petrol in Japan. What's the deal with Oz petrol?

"Jungle-juice" (I don't mean it in a derogatory sense, so apologies to all you lions, tigers, monkeys and elephants out there

) is regular, low-octane stuff (around 91 RON, which corresponds to 87 or 88 AKI in the States). This is sold as "regular" petrol, whereas "super" is 95 RON (about 91 or 92 AKI in American money).

Cars in Australia are tuned to run on 91 RON/88 AKI, except turbos and certain high-compression motors, which should use 95 RON. If 95 RON is not available, the regular 91 RON rat's pee (there's another one!) will do provided you keep the revs at a medium level, don't load up the motor and drive smoothly (no lugging or flooring).

This presents a problem. The performance figures of most Oz market cars suffer (e.g. new M5: 6.2 sec to 100 kph in Australia, approx. 4.8 sec to 100 kph in the UK). Even the Impreza Turbo loses a bit of ground, maybe 5-10% of its potential.

Anyway, that's the background. You can soon buy 98 RON (~95 AKI) in Australia, but its availability is very limited.

Of course, I couldn't care less about this. Hailing from the UK originally I'm relishing in the fact that it no longer costs me A$150/US$100 to fill the tank.

I was in my dad's car at a stop light, and this truck beside us...well was kinda stupid...heh...
he was inching forward.... and (my dad was driving) my dad noticed that there was a bit of distance between the car and the white line, so he moved up (light still red)
the guy in the truck thought it was green and he floored it and ran the red...:P

That gasoline FAQ is *intenese*... I started reading it, but I am 7+ years removed from High School Organic Chemistry.

Maybe I'll skip some parts...

ObOnTopic - I have not been challenged at stoplights *yet*, but then of course I have the GroceryGetter wagon. "GTSCOOB" plates have not seemed to get people to challenge me yet...

Mike (and everyone) -

"lugging" is basically opening the throttle excessively at low revs (<2000) in a high gear (4th or 5th). It's the same effect as short-shifting into 3rd at 15 mph (you know, the whole car vibrates, low-frequency drone from the front of the car, that kind of thing). It's also bad on the main bearings - high load, but not much lubrication due to modest crank speed - as well as being very demanding on the combustion process. This is why using a "medium" engine speed is recommended; asking the driver to use "low" engine speeds would encourage him/her to accelerate in gears that are too high for the road speed, which would be almost as damaging as revving the nuts off it.

Of course, the concept of "lugging" is moot if you have an auto - it just downshifts by itself.

Just adding my $.02...

The only challenge I ever got was a kid in a Prelude. He was next to me at a light, and kept revving his engine. On a wet street. He never had a chance. =^)

I also had a pseudo-challenge recently. A guy pulled up next to me at a light, with the obvious intent of beating me to the next light (his lane turns left at that light). I didn't really go all out, I just wanted to make him work for it... }=^) My wagon and his 2.8 Quattro were pretty much nose-to-nose until 50: I had to change gears and he didn't. :^( Got a friendly wave out of it...

OK, I'll chip in

Only had my Aussie '99 Liberty RX (the '00 style) for a few months and it's dark green, which doesn't tend to rag people so much (I wish you could get Rio Red down here!).

Local taxi drivers use 4 litre Ford Falcons to rattle around in here in Sydney, and these cars are blessed (or cursed) with lots of low-down grunt. So squeezing one's way round town can be quite tiring unless you don't mind full-throttling it off every light. But the roads aren't very porous so when it rains (which is does a fair bit), it's fun watching the occasional cabbie get over-excited and start ploughing on...

yes, they do get in the way don't they?

In a perverse way, I quite fancied the idea of a cheap, coarse V8 with 1,000 lb-ft of torque at 12 rpm, especially as in Australia I could better afford to feed a 10 mpg diet. But like everyone on this list I appreciate quality build, fine engineering and supreme road manners so I steered WELL clear of the Terrible Twins.
