Question My check engine light is on but car is running fine.

Hi people. I just was wondering, my check engine light turned on 3 days ago in my 98 RS. My car is running fine and I have no clue what it could be. I've heard before that our model RS's have problems with the check engine light, but I was hoping someone would reassure me or tell me that info is wrong. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? Someone I know though it may be my O2 sensor, which i know nothing about. Any help would be great. Thanks.

ahhhhh is it still on warranty? if it is then take it in. try checking your oil and see if your gas cap is screwed in good. i've heard lights going on because of this.

I have a MY00 2.5 and the check engine light has come on again. I have no mods and the last time this happened the diagnostic computer said it was with the fuel. Mine started when I switched from 87 to 91 octane. I wouldn't be too concerned with it as long as you aren't hearing any irregular noises coming from the engine. But make sure you get it checked out just to be safe.

Sweder21 -
My '99 did the same thing. The dealership instructed me to switch back to 87 and I no longer have a problem. Supposedly our engines do not create enough heat energy or BTU's to burn off 91 or higher octane causing carbon buildup and throwing a P170 CE light(fuel trim malfunction). I had never heard this before, but so far, they were right.

Mine used to come on in stop-n-go traffic... One day when it threw I turned the car off, went out and took off the gas cap, replaced it, got back in and turned the car on. The light has never come on since. I don't know if I just got into a bad gas cap replacing habit after a while or what. Or maybe the bulb burned out!

Mine came on when I installed an Apex ITC. With the ITC I am able to advance the timing 4 degrees with the use of 91 octaine. What a kick in the ass! My car pulls so hard now. Also, when I use the nitrous, I'm able to retard the timing a degree or two.

That's pretty normal mileage, mine has 25,000 in 11 months.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll give those things a try. I have no mods as of yet, but I run 93 octane gas just because thats what I feed all my cars. That may be the problem, but I would've never guessed paying for better gas would cause more problems.

Unless your car is detinating or pinging, you are just throwing money away. The gas isn't cleaner or anything, it is just harder to set it on fire, so to speak.

Concur with what SubaFastR said.

Just drop by a dealer and have them pull the code. Easy way to find out if it is anything to worry about. It "should" be a quick pop in...any monkey can run the scan tool they use. Takes but a minute.

I had the light go on at 3,000 miles, and again at something like 20k. Both times, a faulty MAF sensor.

I thought the faulty MAF was only a problem on the 99 RS's..... but not the 98's.... is this true?

Yea, I took my 01 in too. I wasn't aware of the 02 sensor recall either. Since I just got my RS 6 months ago...I would have thought the dealership would have known about it, since it was the last one on their lot.

Mine came on tonight. I shifted at about 4k into 4th gear and the check engine light came on, blinked 4 or 5 times and turned back off. Any ideas? It hasn't come back on since.

The other guys ideas for checking the light were great. Also if that dosent work try resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery for 15 mins. Then reconnect it and let your car sit at idle for 5 mins. It will relearn everything. That might fix it.

Ripper,
DOn't do that!! Then you'll never know what was actually wrong. Get the code pulled. Stop using 93 octane and save yourself the money. It does not help your car. It just causes extra carbon buildup.

Siper2 - YOu don't have a MAF sensor, you have a MAP.
