Default one of life's greatest mysteries...

... at least for me?

our legacy has the fuel door on the right side. the forester i'm driving right now has the same thing. there's even a notice on the gauge cluster says the door is on the right. i'm assuming imprezas are the same too.

why is that? almost every other car i can think of... has it on the left?

Most japanese cars have it on the left, and most domestic cars have it on the right... I dunno why that is...

most japanese cars have it on the left, exhaust on the right.

domestics i see are mostly mixed... i guess that's from having joint projects w/ euro or japanese manufacturers

euro cars are mostly on the right, exhaust on the left.

why is it that way? i have no clue, except i keep on forgetting which side my gas door is, switching between the camry and the impreza

Our exhaust system runs on the left side of the car, hence the fuel tank is on the right side.

The real question is: Is the fuel door on the left hand side of the car in RHD countries?

different car manufacturer purposely put them on different sides of the car to made our life more interesting. imagine how boring it would be if we alway knew what side the gas door is

hmm, good explanations.

The way I thought of it was just mainly what side the driver sits. On japanese vehicles, its RHD so they put the gas tank opposite of the driver's side (left side). And on euro/domestic vehicles, they're LHD so they put it on the opposite side once again (right side).

I figure when stuff goes wrong, and in the case of the gas tank BLOWING UP! That it won't blow up on the same side as the driver, allowing him to get away unharmed. heheheehe, my weird imagination.

As for Subaru? beats me, maybe they separately designed the tank configuration for USDM and JDM?

.....
hm... maybe they put the gas tank on the opposite side of the exhaust usually because the gas tank door makes that side of the body look .. um.... "imperfect"? and since the other side of the body already have an exhaust, that will even or level out the odd looks?

The JDM Imprezas have the fuel filler door on the right side as well...and the exhaust on the left side.

It's simple people, exhaust on left side, fuel tank on right side. Use your imagination why it's like that...pretty simple if you think about it.

What if you have the exhaust on both sides like in BearBear's car?? HA HA!! Do you need to have the fuel doors for both sides as well?
