do i need the StreetTuner to download/buy a map for stage2 but safely push higher boost?
i mean, i want to SAFELY boost closer to 17psi but i don't wanna risk killing my car. and i know some companies sell pretuned maps for certain wants but they are expensive and if i need to buy them(~$500) and StreetTuner($400) i may as well throw on a vf turbo. besides, i don't even want to THINK about tuning myself.

if you don't want to tune yourself, don't even think about getting street tuner. If you already have the AP, all you need to do is find a tuner and get a custom map made, it will only cost you dyno time, which will vary from 150-300.

I second this. Too much boost is death sentence for a wrx turbo.

What you want is a accessport and someone that does PRO tuner. Street Tuner is the tuning software for the end user. For joe schmoe that wants to tune their car themselves.

Granted, the OP probably doesn't belong in ST, which is the ultimate question. |

correct, i do not want StreetTuner, unless i absolutely need it. and even if i did only bad things would happen. i've just seen some posts and threads by tuning shops selling their maps for APs and i wasn't sure if i needed to upgrade to Streettuner to consider their maps that have worked for many others w/o problems. dammit, y does it have be so complicated for me to safely push 17psi. its a pretty reasonable number isn't it?
any recommendations as to how to achieve this goal? |

it's not hard at all. I would recommend finding a tuner within driving distance that does PROtunes, go there, explain your goals to the tuner, and be done with it. www.cobbtuning.com has a list of protuners. |

20psi !?!?!? hahaha i don't know if my turbo or me would die first
but we would all find out pretty quick. i just wanna push 17psi and run a little rich for safe measure. rich helps prevent detonation doesn't it? 5-10hp is nothing compared to reliability. so i can't just buy a map from a tuner online? i guess it would cost about the same either way. so how much should it cost to get a protune for me? |

protune should be between 1-2 hours, the hourly rates tuners charge will vary somewhat, i would call the tuner and get a qoute. custom tune > mail tune.
