Default Momentum 40T turbo took a dump

Well, the on going battle about momentum and the 40T's reliability jsut took another hit. I was a big fan of the 40T when others hated Momentum. It was a cheap turbo that seemd and did make lots of power and outperformed the competition. My car made 300+WHP and 300+WTQ with the 40T turbo. I was impressed, my car ran low 12's consistantly.

Anyways, i sold the car and with no more than 6K miles total on the 40T it seized up. So the specualtion about the momentum turbos being reliable seems to be true.

Anyone looking to buy a 40T, i say jsut spend the extra money and get a 18G. In the long run it will be cheaper.

Now, Momentum says they give a 1 year warranty with the turbo, so i guess we'll see how that holds up too.

Jsut another caution to those looking to buy a momentum turbo.

I saw your post in another thread about this. I'm glad I didn't purchase one. Another vendor told me about these turbos seizing up and people having difficulty getting them replaced. I'm sure glad I ordered my 18g

Normal 500 mile break-in... my car was tuned for 21psi on pump with meth injection...

The turbo just sucks. I did get 330whp/330wtq on the initial tune, though.

Mine was a tester, so I only paid $510 last August... but it still sucks none the less.

I was looking at pics of a momentum 40t in a thead in the fs forum and realized that it looked very similar to the big 16g turbochargers.com sell for 630 shipped on ebay....down to the same packaging and box.

are they the same turbos? anyone with a 40t compare to the pics here

Hmm...both turbos are made in taiwan. Both are reputed to be clones of the 16g turbo. Could very well be possible!

those picks were scary, was the turbo seizing the extent of the damage to the engine, or did it suck some of the fins when it exploded

Curious...did you prime the turbo with oil before you started it the first time after you installed it?

YES... IGN 15A fuse out, turn engine over for 30 seconds... primed. IGN 15A fuse in... start car. Break-in with factory boost for 500 miles.

yes, i primed the turbo too, and i also drilled out the banjo bolt hole the feeds oil to the turbo like momentum suggested.

Just a POS turbo, dont buy one.

And here is where I get to come in, say I told you so, and laugh at all the people that told me I didnt know what I was talking about, and that I was just a fanboy (fanboy of what? Quality???)

Anyone that bought a momentum turbo, after seeing how that guy acted, and seeing the comparison pics, deserved to get screwed. There was NO speculation, There were PICS, and there were people who KNOW turbos, explaining, in great detail, that they were garbage. But for some reason, all these people who had never actually SEEN a turbo up close before their subaru, decided they knew more.

What is hilarious, is that when those comparison pics went up, and all these idiots came out of the woodwork and said it was a lie, and that the poster was just making it up, now that there is ABSOLUTE PROOF of how low quality these momentum turbos are, NONE of these guys will have the balls to man up and admit they were wrong. Typical internet COWARDS.

<<Me doing the "I am right again" dance. I never get tired of it.

Well I got mine before all of the hooplah happened. So far it has been a great turbo for me and I have nothing bad to say about it. I always want more so my desire of an 18g is typical of my constant desire of greater and greater amounts of power. If it blows it blows and I learn a hard lesson. Mine cost me almost nothing so the lesson isn't even all that hard. You gotta pay if you want to play some of us don't mind looking for different avenues to play on. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

I got my turbo before Momentum went public with sales of it... The guy offered it to me at $510 as a tester to see how it would do on an EJ207 and I was looking into getting a slightly bigger turbo anyways... so I bit the hook. I was impressed with the dyno numbers that I made, but the turbo started making noise (actually, it started on the way home from the dyno session), so I kne it was done.

If you search my profile of all the posts I made, you will see that I was never defending those guys because I was just happy to get a seemingly decent turbo for about $300 less than the alternative choices. I should have gotten a VF22 like I was planning....
