Talking 2004 sti fuel tank in 95 impreza

Hey, I am doing an awd/manual swap on my impreza I have all the parts except the fuel tank. I was offered an 04 sti tank, would that fit and work? What else would I need? Thanks all thoughts welcomed.

the '04 STi tank will be LEV-2 emissions, a 95 is OBD-1, you really need to get a pre 96 AWD gas tank in order for it to fit correctly and have everything work

What would not work? The tank will fit fine. I was looking at doing the same thing but for a full swap were everything from another car was used. Can you not reuse the old fuel sending unit in the new tank to solve any issues?

Besides the floorpan being different? Sure the old sending unit can be reused....but getting that STi tank in the old chassis will not be a simple bolt in affair.

It'd be better to simply find a tank from an early AWD car. I got one to go in my 96 for a scant $125 at a parts yard. Add a WRX pump to that and you're in business. I would even suggest staying with an "L" tank instead of the larger capacity "RS" tank as fuel starvation problems do not seem to crop up in the smaller tanks.

I know someone who put a Ver. 8 tank into a GC. He said that it bolted right in with no problems.

yes but unless he was using all the componets of the tank it's going to cause some problems(such as tank not wanting to fill with gas)

The filling issues can be worked around if you know how.

i guess the way i look at it is, if the tank is damn near free then go for it, if you are paying for it then i would personally try to find the tank made for that vehicle

you can't use the STi sending units, they are not compatible with a GC

I wired a version 3 STi harness into a 99RS tank. Since the version 3 isn't OBD2, there were a total of I think 4 wires that I actually hooked up--two each for the level sensor and two for the pump. There were maybe 11 others that are just hanging free now. As simple as it is, I don't know why you couldn't use it functionally.
