Daimler's Smart signs MoU w/ "Project Kimber" on Roadster

Quote:
FRANKFURT – DaimlerChrysler's struggling Smart brand has signed a memorandum of understanding to sell a licence for its defunct Roadster model to a British consortium called “Project Kimber,” Smart said on Monday.
“The goal of the memorandum of understanding is to jointly draft a contract in the coming months that allows the British to redesign, build and sell the former Smart Roadster and Roadster Coupe models under a different brand,” the unit said in a statement.

Smart also intends to sell production equipment for the two models that are no longer needed, it said.

The unit discontinued the Roadster and its coupe derivative last year as part of an initial broad restructuring of the brand, which has not made a profit since its creation.

It also scrapped plans to build a compact offroader, instead focusing its model range on just the brand's original ForTwo minicar and the subcompact ForFour.

Last week, Daimler Chief Executive and Mercedes head Dieter Zetsche told a conference call with analysts that Smart had narrowed its operating loss in 2005 from around 600 million euros ($716.5 million) in the year before.

While Zetsche has said he wants to give the unit time to achieve its target of breaking even next year, he has already tasked Goldman Sachs with the job of screening parties potentially interested in buying the brand.

Thank God MB is giving up on the Smart. Now maybe someone with a clue will buy the brand and start selling them in the US - and no, Zap and it's three-year waiting list doesn't count. (May be too little, too late, however.)

It does somewhat amaze me that Smart is not yet in the US. We've had them in Canada for about a year now, and Canada has tougher bumper standards. Maybe it's the diesel thing.

smart roadster with a 600cc engine should be mandated as the only car you can drive from 16 to 21 years of age.

they look great, are cheap to run and are slow enough that you can street race without anyone noticing or getting hurt ... because by the time you hit the speed limit you are in the next state.

We need more of these good-looking yet very inexpensive cars. MoAr!!
