Default The GTO is Dead..

Autonews

Quote:

Pontiac will drop the GTO this year
DETROIT -- General Motors has told Pontiac dealers that it will discontinue the GTO coupe at the end of this model year. GM will make the last deliveries of the vehicle to dealers by the end of September, sources close to Pontiac say.

GM will produce 10,000 to 12,000 more GTOs before dropping the nameplate, one source close to the situation says. Last year, Pontiac sold 11,590 GTOs compared to 2004 when it sold 13,569. That's a 14.6 percent drop.

When Pontiac launched the GTO in 2003, it projected 18,000 annual sales. The vehicle was criticized for bland styling, and some fans of the original GTO complained that it lacked nostalgic styling cues.

"For the remaining life of the car, it simply wasn't worth the engineering expense or effort to re-certify it as an '07 for a very limited run, when we could continue selling them as '06s," says a source close to GM who is familiar with the program.

The GTO is built on a rear-wheel drive architecture from GM's Holden division in Australia. The present model is going out of production as GM constructs the new Zeta RWD architecture, says the source. There is no replacement coupe planned at this time and because of the strong Australian and weak U.S. dollar, the GTO had to be priced thousands over where GM originally wanted it -- in the mid-twenties, the source says. "It never did as much volume as we had hoped," the source says.

The GTO suggested retail price starts at $31,990, including shipping. One GM source says, "the 2005 and 2006 were pretty well sold out, and sales were especially strong in areas of GM weakness, like Southern California. It's a shame it has to go -- for now."

Another source says that GM has indicated that it would like to have another vehicle in that "space" in the future.

I still don't get the flap over the GTO badge being used. It was, similar to the original, a seemingly benign car that was a blast to drive. They underpowered the new one the first year it was out, but it's still a good car. I'd drive one, at least.

I guess my problem is that I'm not sure just how fond of retro styling I really am. It lacks originality. Don't get me wrong, I really like what Detroit's putting out under Mustang and Challenger nameplates (assuming the Challenger makes it to production as rumored) but I also like taking nameplates into the future without relying solely on the appeal of the original. I dunno, the new GTO seemed to be more in that spirit in that it occupied a similar place in the market as the original without recycling the look of the original.

It had to be phased out eventually due to the Camaro coming back.

Yet again, GM's bland styling kills another ok product. The underpinnings of the GTO were great, slightly dated but still very good. GM stylists did nothing to inspire people to buy.

too bad. the problem lies with the pontiacisation of the car's styling. They could kill a rebadged 911 if they through that look on it.

Numbers on the car were nice, BUT why the ugly styling??? It looked like a gaint cavalier...which was ugly to begin with. GM needs to get of its a$$ and design cars that will sell. To a majority of people, numbers don't sell cars, looks do. Thats why the new Mustang is doing so well even though it still uses an old platform.

The Mustang will always sell because it's a Mustang - it's the default sportscar to the average American. The GTO was a good idea, but poorly executed. I guess it was just a filler until the Camaro is released.

Ford's US and European deisgns seem to be going in different directions, which is a shame because their European cars have a consistant look.

.. And the GT starts at like $26k with 300hp. It drives like a $26k 300hp car, too...

The GTO had decent numbers. Good power, good suspension, pretty decent interior, good gearbox, etc. It was a bit overweight, could've stood to lose about 200 lbs (was about 3750lbs if I remember correctly, better than the new Charger/300C/Magnum, but still kinda heavy).

If it looked better and was about 200lbs lighter I'd consider it a contender. But it looks as bland as a Cavalier, hoodscoops or not.

My parents have a Brand new GTO,
The thing is hideous, Not to mention it is Yellow. Takes like 5 min. to shift from 1-2, 2-3, and so on. The only thing it has goin for it in my mind is the 6.0 and its comfortable my friend is 6-2 and he fit in the back with plenty of room to spare.
In my opinion they should have gave me the 32k so i could have one bad ass WRX. Know what I mean

If they made the GTO look like this, I probably would be driving a GTO instead of STI now.

This begs the question: Are there really enough fanbois to sustain the GTR when it comes to the US w/ an extra 100 hp and $20k in MSRP over the GTO?

I personally think that the landscape will be a-changing in the automobile world.

Well, They only said there wouldn't be recertification for an '07 Model. They may continue a new GTO on the new rear drive platform.

My biggest problem with the GTO is the same issue with the Solstice. Useless trunk. I mean, you may not want to do Home Depot runs, but a few suitcases would be nice (Or in the Solstice case, an overnight bag).

That is EXACTLY what they should have made it look like. Hell, they didn't even really need to touch anything else - just teh sheetmetal (which would have been fairly cheap for them to fix).

But I think it was a foregone conclusion taht the GTO was going since the Monaro it was based on was getting redesigned for next year anyways, right?

I am SURE that the GTO (or probably a FireBird) will get ressurected when the Camaro comes out in '09, so this isn't that huge of a loss in my book. And they better make it look something like this concept:

Seems that everyone complains about the silly Pontianc grill, and I think ^^^ that car bring that double-grill up to the 21st century. Looks awesome.

They should bring the pick-up version over from Australia and sell it as the new El Camino.
