Do not buy any sub just for the looks of it! If you want you can always make a box look good with some plexiglass and neon lights, but don't buy it because the color matches your interior or something to that effect. Most people are into the stealth look, but it's kind of hard when you have a wagon and need an enclosure. I mounted a 12" sub in the middle of my spare tire and it sounds pretty good with 600w pumped into it. I think I liked the bazooka I had in there before, but that took up way too much space. If you want something that looks good and preforms good, and has a good value, go for the SoloBaric like someone else said. That square sub trips everyone out, specially when they hear/see it pumping.

Im quite fond of my old fashioned round subs. MB Quart PWD line of subs are amazing. Alpines type R's are pretty sweet too. As far as the square, hexagonal and whatnot... theres a reason speakers have been round for a reason.

There are a few reasons speakers have been round, but I wouldn't count out any odd-shaped speakers until I heard them. But, it is true that for the most part a round speaker should perform as good or better than a square one. A round speaker in theory should be more rigid and less likely to flex and distort, but new production techniques make it possible for a square speaker to sound good. Fifty years ago, it wouldn't have been possible to make a square speaker that sounded good. Round speakers are MUCH easier to make. And they are still cheaper to make, but again, new technology shouldn't be frowned upon. The point is: You never know until you hear it!
As far as the original question, I don't go for look sas much as I go for sound, but there are many nice looking speakers out. |

The best sub IMO is the one that sounds the best to you and fits your needs the best.
Myself, I wanted a pair of lightweight Sound Quality 12's (about 22lbs for the pair of drivers), would work well in a small sealed box (0.88 cubes) and plays down really low and get fairly loud... Image Dynamics baby ![]() |

I agree with Joe Z the new triangle subs from bazooka, the most efficient for someone that wants to pile a tonns of subs in there trunk and look cool, my second woulg be the JBL gt pro power it has a 18 inch depth

If you are going for looks then I would say the Kicker L7 Solo-Baric or the PPI flat bore (no real "cone" to speak of) look pretty sweet. Either of those should sound pretty good too (L7 for deep loud bass or the PPi for SQ) for either purpose. But both will need a pretty beefy amp to drive them.
I want to get a 10" L7 and try to use as little trunk space as possible. My $.02 Jakezor |

Insofar as LOOKS, I'd definitely agree on Xtant's hexagonal subwoofers. Not to mention that Xtant is a completely kick-butt, wonderful company. And made in the USA, to boot!
![]() (I've been wanting one of their X603 amps for months.) Eclipse's titanium line is very cool, too. There's a bunch more, but those are two I like. Now, how they sound is indeed more important. Haven't heard either of them personally. The Boston Acoustics Pro is, was, and will remain to be one of the best subs out there, IMO. Velodyne used to make car subs... They weren't boomy, but as far as SQ is concerned, I hear that there are very few subs in the world that could match them. (Maybe Dynaudio? a/d/s ?) -S2- |

That Audiobahn looks like a 8" cone in a 12" sub frame.
That surround is huge! How much Xmax does it get? |

Yeah, I've seen those before. They do LOOK impressive. They also look extremely inefficient. They must need a ton of power to get moving. A lot of subs that have a nice back end like that one could be mounted backwards in a smaller box to show them off. Or a plexi window with a mirrored box inside could show them off. You can do a lot with the looks. Remeber one thing though: If you go only for looks and you can't back it up with good sound, people will laugh at you. You'll be like the guy who tubs out his mustang, adds a big hood scoop, dual exhaust and skinnies up front. Then when you go to race him, you find out he's only got a four cylinder.
I would much rather be the sleeper in the all stock car that blows you away when you didn't expect it, than to be all show and no go! |

My AWT12 has a 20mm x-max. Thats .79" of travel each way adding up to over an inch and a half of cone travel!
You are right about the efficiency part. This woofer is rated to handle 2000watts rms power and doesn't even budge with any less than 500watts rms power. This woofer weighs over 30lbs so be ready for the ups guy to ask "what the heck is this"? Brad |

The A/D/S subs sound OK, not good enough for the price. To me, they look like normal subs. That's why I just kept my old JL 10W1.
Pretty? For me, it's prettiest when no one can tell where that bass is coming from! |

I've been fond of JBL stuff myself. I put JBL GTO963 and GTO522(?)s in the 'rents Caravan a loooong time ago and they've been following me around ever since. One of the 6x9s made it into my truck (have to cut a hole in the sheet metal for the other).
