Believe the bolt pattern is the same year to year. The 205-55/16 should fit and be very close for Speedo calibration as +2 fitment. The folks at TireRack are always very helpful on fitment questions and the call is free! 1-888-374-8473

It'll work just fine if you've got the right size tires.

I've got 16" GT wheels on my 93 with 205/50s and it's just fine.

Unfortunately, www.tirerack.com is not cooperating with me right now. So, I'll just have to give you the math and let you figure it out (if I had tirerack.com available, I could find out your stock tire size and work it out for you).

I will guess that your car has 195/70R-14 tires on it now (go take a look at the sidewalls of your current tires). That means the overall diameter of the tire is:

(195mm * 0.70 * 2) + (14in * 25.4mm/in) = 628.6mm.

If you're not familiar with tire size calculations, here's where all that comes from: 195mm is the tire's section width; the "70" is the aspect ratio - each sidewall is 70% of 195mm tall, and you have 2 sidewalls; and the 14 is the diameter of the rim in inches (which you already know). You want to maintain the same rolling diameter, but now you'll have a 16" rim, so your sidewalls need to be smaller.

So, we take that 628.6mm and we subtract the big wheel hole in the middle:

628.6mm - (16in * 25.4mm/in) = 222.2mm

You need your 2 sidewalls combined to be about 222mm tall to maintain the proper overall tire height. Let's assume we want to use a 205mm wide tire (the width that comes stock on the 2.5GT 16" rim). We need to figure out what aspect ratio is now that we know the total sidewall height we want and the section width we want:

222.2mm/2 = 111.1mm (we want each sidewall to be 111.1mm tall)

Now divide that by the section width to get the desired aspect ratio:

111.1mm/205mm = 0.542

Well, they don't make 205/54R-16 tires, but they do make 205/55R-16 tires, so that's what you want. Strangely enough, that's the stock tire size used on the '97-99 2.5GT with the 16" rims. (Secretly, I worked the problem backwards in order to guess that your car has 195/70-14 tires on it, which is why the problem worked out so well ).

If your stock tire size is not 195/70-14, well, you can just plug in the proper numbers and do exactly what I did above and you can figure out what size will be right for the 16" rims.

Of course, now that I'm done typing all of that, the Tire Rack site is working just fine. It tells me that the '96 Legacy L used a 185/70-14 rather than a 195, so my numbers are off a bit. It looks like DLC is right, then - a 205/50-16 is the best fit.

I just did a search for 205/50-16s over on the Tire Rack. I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, so I'm assuming you want a high performance summer tire. In that case I would say your best bets are the Potenza RE730 and the Kumho ECSTA 712. Both are pretty new tires, both are quite inexspensive for a performance tire, and both have received very good reviews by fellow iClubbers. If you do a search for "712" or "RE730" in the Suspension, Rims, and Tires Forum I'm sure you'll turn up lots of good feedback.

You might want to think about bumping up to a 205/55-16. There are way more tire options in that size - a very popular OEM tire size for a number of car makers.

I doubt you would have any sort of clearance problems at all - your '96 body style is identical to my '97, which came with 205/55-16s stock. If anything my 2.5GT may ride a bit lower than a "regular" Legacy, since the GT is supposed to be more sporting. So clearance shouldn't be a problem.

What probably will be a bit off is your speedo - it will read about 3.3% off. That means that when your speedo indicates 70mph, you'd actually be doing 72.5mph or something like that. Not a huge deal. And this may not be a problem at all anyway. I've read that a number of guys with 2.5RSs have gone from the stock 205/55s down to 205/50s and they've then clocked the car using mile markers on the highway. For some reason, the speedo was still right, even though technically it should be off by a couple percent. Kinda strange, but I've heard this from a few different people.

Thumbs up

Iceman, Try taking a look at the Yoko AVS db decibel for $101 ea in 205/55 16 from TireRack. There was a recent member post raving about the all around performance of this tire and the price is not bad!! Good wear index and very good performer in the rain. my $.02. I'll be looking at these when my Pirellis are used up.

yea they look good but they dont come in the size i need 205/50-16! thats the problem i have, looks like if i choose this plan im look at the "pirelli p7000 supersports". does anyone know if the 205/55-16 will fit on the 96 with enough clearence? i would rather do that because i would have a lot more tires to choose from, but right now its not looking to good.
thank you all for your help!

Ice, One more time....Call TireRack 1-888-374-8473(FREE CALL)with your concerns about fitment. From everything I've read on this post there would be NO PROBLEM with clearance on the 205/55 16 on your Legacy, That's what we're all running (stock) on the 16" rims.... only a VERY SLIGHT speedo error.

Well, you might want to upgrade the HORNS too!! I can recommend the Hella SuperTones. I replaced the stockers on our Legacy, and these babies will peel paint!! Not very pricey either!
