Great writeup! I did the bulb replacement just now and the fog light button and cruise control buttons now illuminate. Thanks a lot.

Just stumbled across this thread and all I have to say is thank you! Not only has it been 2 years since my fog and cruse switches lit up but I also found a bulb that will work in my old skool Greddy gauges!

Thanks much, just did this to my fog light switch. Worked great!

Note to others, I found the bulbs in the drawers in the back of the store filed under Flashlight bulbs.

+1 My cruise button stopped lighting up yesterday so went out and did this. Also my fog light button never was lite since I've owned the car, went and replaced that one also with the same steps. It was really simple and easy to do! Thanks for the write up!

Thumbs up great post

I followed these instructions on my 99 Legacy station wagon. It worked like a charm. Only difference is that I had both lamps and so I replaced both. I also used a little dab of silicon on the end of the lamp, being careful to keep the wires separated, to help extend the Radio Shack lamp a little ways out of the mount, providing more light for the switch. Worked perfectly!

Thanks so much for posting this in such great detail!

Old thread bump. Thanks for the write up! I've been wondering for 1.5 years if the switch was supposed to light up or not!

Default Fixing button backlights with LEDs

Excellent thread, didn't realize there were lights on those buttons in my car. Went to replace them on my '01 Outback and didn't want to go to Radioshack, and it turns out that the hole for those bulbs is a *perfect* size for an LED. I had some cheap RGB LEDs from China lying around, so I soldered them in with a 1K ohm resistor in series (trimming off the extra legs so only one color was used). The upper tabs on the buttons for the bulbs are positive, lower is negative.

I used green for the letters and red for the indicator light. Here's a comparison between the old backlight (left) and the new (right) (sorry, didn't have a working bulb to show the old indicator light)

I didn't do any experimenting to see if there is a filter to remove if you wanted to change the light color (takes a while to heat up the metal tabs for soldering to), but if there isn't it's just a simple matter of choosing the color you want.

I have had to replace a few bulb lights on my car and the wifes outback.... they are a piece of cake... radio shack near me though has closed its doors so I either order it online or goto the small local electronics stores which tend to have a good selection and not to mention people behind the counter that really know their electronics...I did not think about a LED but hey if you got them and they work go for it!

Default Works 100%!! Thanks!!

Worked 100%!! So Easy!! I saw this Excellent Post with the Photos and stopped by Radio Shack on my way home from work. Sure enough, they had the Lights in stock. $2.00 for a pack of 2 Mini LED Lights!!

I get home, pop off the coin box revealing the fuse area, I reach up inside and after 10 seconds I push on the Cruise Control switch and it pops right out!!

Sure enough, just like the photos, there are two bulbs, one of mine on my 2002 Subaru Forester L has been burned out for about a year and I can't tell if the Cruise Control is ON or OFF.

Well, I replaced the bulb with a new one as shown in this post!! Took me about 10 minutes, Very Easy to do!!

Pop the switch back in, IT WORKS!!!

THANK YOU!!!! Excellent Info!!

I just tried to do this with some bulbs from superbrightleds.com and nothing happened. The switches still worked but nothing lights up on either switch. Did I miss a step or should I just have gotten the old style bulb?

You didn't get the bulbs lined up with the power. Also some bulbs are directional in how they need power.

This is common. Use a volt meter you will see it still has power. It's just a pain to put these in and get them to work right.

Pull out the bulb. Just be careful not to cross anything.

They aren't LEDs, they are mini bulbs. If you are attempting to use LEDs this is why it's not working. Use the radioshack ones that are mentioned earlier in the thread.
