Default FMIC w/ Factory Airbox (V2 STI)

I am thinking about picking up one of those cheap xo2 or hybrid intercoolers for my swap (v2 into 00RS) but have been reading plenty of posts about classics running lean with anything but the factory airbox. Would it be possible to fit any type of fmic with the factory airbox or am I stuck with the top mount?

alot of people have FMIC's on OG imprezas. i cant answer the going lean question bc i havnt fitted one and dyno'ed it to really prove anything, but its quite possible a lean condition would be caused by somthing other than the airbox being changed. the USDM obd 100 stupidity goes lean with lotsa mods, but the OG ej20G is rather good with mods. millions of cars with airfliters and the such here JDM land.
