Default NHTSA Effectively Kills Off Skyline Gray Market Imports

On Monday, Mar 1, 2006, NHTSA announced in the Federal Register that it had rescinded its earlier import eligibility decision for 1990-1995 Nissan Skylines. The decision means that only 1996-1998 Skylines are deemed eligibile for import as far as NHTSA is concerned. However, I suspect the EPA won't let those models be imported because I don't think anybody's deveoped an OBD-II solution for them. So no more Skylines.

NHTSA's docket for this decision is at http://dms.dot.gov/search/searchResu...berValue=22654 and the decision announcement is near the bottom of the list.

I've never seen NHTSA re-visit an import eligibility decision before. Very weird.

Strange.

Kinda sucks, but they're overrated anyhow, IMO.

unfortunately in Canada they've determined that the skyline's glass and headlights dont meet DOT standards. So looks like the skyline is gonna be gone soon.

Yeah.. just like the Supra, 300ZX and 3000GT were killed because of their companies' respective loss.

oh.. you said 'made a killing'..

It really doesn't matter. The next gen Infinity/Nissan GT-R is going on sale in the North America in couple of years anyway. And it will probably sell for less than what it costs to import and legalize a used Skyline in good condition.

It is funny how everyone assumes that the Skyline would have risen above the fact that the high priced japanese lux-o coupe was a failed market in the early/mid 90s.

Yes, the Infiniti G35 is badged as a Skyline in Japan.... Sorry guys, get over it....

And since the new GT-R is supposed to have dropped the RB26DETT and cost over $80k, I'm pretty much sure that it's not going to be worth the wait for most of us.....

They just try to stop us from getting other cars and trying to buy their crap. I would never buy an American car since I have never heard anything good about them, only bad.

Guys, to be educated in the ways of the RB motor and the Skyline Love, go to www.nicoclub.com

Skyline is really not overrated. I have my love for Scuby, but I'd drop this car (or an STi) in a heartbeat for just about any Skyline.

Unfortunately, yes it died because of the market. Japan caught onto muscle a little on the late side and got caught with a market that wanted efficiency and gas mileage. The fate was the same for the Supra, 300ZX, 3000GT, RX-7, and whatever else I'm missing.

Skyline is coming over 08 I believe, last time I checked (long time ago). It is a glorified G35 with a few mor paint scheme options. I believe its going to be Supercharged with an 8 speed paddleshift option. (Once again, haven't followed Nissan since I bought my Suby)

Owning my 05 Impreza and a wrecked 91 240SX that still drives, I'm amazed at Nissans early 90's engines and durability. My 240 S-13 has been in five accidents (all previous owner) Including a sideways slide into a tree. This car had the engine run dry of oil by the previous owner, was running metal on metal on the rotors, and trunk and doors didnt seal right. New brakes, battery, tank of gas and oil change, and this baby ran like a champ. I pulled the plugs and the electrode were all but non-existant. Had factory plugs at 96 k

And to top it off, R-title, bent frame, electrical short, bald tires, bad synchros and clutch, needs a new timing chain and all.... It smokes my 2.5RS. I know it cuz of drivetrain (RWD vs. AWD) with engines of equal HP. I have respect for Nissans products (atleast the 90's ones), and I love both my cars, Suby for AWD and better handling with nicer drive feel, and Nissan for sweet drifting fun and a car to beat the piss out of .
Every company has its ups and downs.... and BTW, Nissan Skyline owners like to buy the engine and the car separate. Allows for cheaper easier import instead of that crap company that imports from Cali.

Well you'd better tell Nissan, they seem to think it is a Skyline:
