Default Question on versions of stock ECUs - year variations?(looking at I-Speed Reflash)

I'm in the market for an I-Speed RS reflash for my '02 Forester. I-Speed has their buy Option #2 available for certain years of RS Impreza models(whatever few they have in stock from various years). With this option they send you a reflashed ECU and you send your stock one back for a core charge. As well, they have their Option $1 where you send in your ECU, they reflash, and they ship it back to you. I like Option #2 as I don't need a second ECU nor am I left with a 3000 lb. paper weight for a couple weeks if I don't buy a second ECU.

Now the problem comes about with the model years of the cars, both Impreza and Forester. I'm not sure how the ECUs varied between years...if at all. All I know is that there was a redesign for the Impreza cars in '02 and for the Forester in '03. If there was any change, it would have been then. However, prior to that, I have no clue. Is a '98 Impreza ECU identical to my '02 Forester ECU(same model)? Or, did they vary from year to year or across platforms?

I'm trying to get some info on this to either:
A) Let I-Speed know I can use year Y-Z of Impreza ECUs in my Forester as an Option #2 buy...or....

B)So I know which years to look for to buy a stock ECU cheap. If I can use a '00 Impreza ECU and can get it for $50, I'd be happy.

I'm just trying to get some data on which ECUs are compatable/identical to each other through the year ranges and platforms.
