Default AFR and H2O/Alky injection

Do AFR gauges work with water/alky injection? During spray? Are they accurate?

yes. How do you think we tune the fueling?

The alcohol will throw off the AFR reading, but to how much I do not know. The fact is that 1.0 lambda with Ethyl Alcohol is around 9:1 instead of 14.7 like gas. If you imagined that you ran Pure alcohol, a reading of 14.7:1 on your WB which was configured for gas, which 14.7 = 1.0 lambda, then when you were actually running 9:1 then the gauge would read 14.7.

You can calculate it by figuring in your mixture ratio and effective stoich afr, or you can do pulls where you are not tuned for the alky and compare runs with/without to see how it affects your measurements.

Thanks, guys. I was thinking that the water would really throw a wrench in the cogs of the actual reading, since stoich would be so different.... The water/alky mix seems like it would be a complex mixture to model, with a "fuel" and the inert water acting as a heat reducer.

Ah, just proves how little I know about this stuff.

It will change it VERY dramatically. A 50/50 mix landed me at 8.6-1 in the load sites that I hadnt pulled fuel.

As for what navyblue is saying, no, your gauge reads correctly.

For the turboxs tunerpro, you configure what a lambda of 1.0 equates to. If you set it to 14.7(gasoline) then when the tuner sees lambda of 1.0, it displays and logs "14.7". If you leave it configured that way but decide to run pure alcohol, a lambda of 1.0 would actually be 9:1 but the tuner would still display 14.7 because that is what you told it to display when it sees the lamda of 1.0. Does this make sense?

in my experience, i've found that injecting alky might not change your AFR as much as one would think considering its an oxygenated fuel. when i first started tuning my car injecting ethanol, my AFR shifted a few tenths of an AFR richer.

also, a WBO2 sensor configured for measuring AFR of gasoline will be off when measuring the AFR of alky. check this out:
