Default I'm competing with my dad

My dad and I are in competition, and I think he's winning right now.
His CAT scan revealed a 7cm (yes, cm) aneurism(sp) from is aortic artery. So he's gonna have to get chopped up. I'm still waiting on getting an MRI (this week I think) to see if I have a pituitary tumor which all the signs are pointing that I do.

yay.

My pops is kinda like me, sick, dry sense of humor. So he was saying his op had a 5% mortality rate, and he allready got a check together POD if he kicks over, says it's enough for the funeral, and starts telling me what I'll get in a half '...and behind this curtain, a fabulous new...' way.

I'm just hoping if I have a tumor it's benign, if it's not I think I have a date with a hooker, a rented porsche, and an oz of blow in my future.

Look on the brightside right

If it's dry, sick humor you like, then go out together in a blaze of glory. Hunt hoes together on a father/son whirlwind truckstop rampage.

Aortic Aneurysm surgeries are not small potatoes, good luck to your dad, on the bright side, getting surgery on it now before it bursts they do a hell of a lot better. Once they rupture its about an automatic 50% death rate, a la John Ritter.

Wow. That's heavy. Hopefully you'll both wind up losers(winners?...whichever one means alive and well) in this one. You're a good guy to have on the boards. If things do turn out for the worse though...you should do all your plans, but hire a cameraman to record your last days as well. Well...that's what I'd do if I was given one of those "you have x hours/days to live" scenarios. Best of luck to the both of you.

Eh, funny is funny.. but I do appreciate the good wishes. I think my MRI should be this week or next.

We didn't talk for ~3years, we didn't get along from when I was about 4-19, so on that note I'm glad we talk now.

Also for the pituitary thing, my sex drive had been crappy for a while (ergo no more I met a new redhead, boned a girl from a truckstop, etc threads) So I got some stuff checked, low testosterone, balls a-ok, which means pituitary prob, which meant more tests, and sure enough my pituitary gland is way out of whack... and once you get to the 'out of whack' part it often means pituitary tumor.

But again, there is a brightside, I'm on roids now... which means you all will get to hear more of my stories low how this heeb started his new relationship with the daughter of two pastors with sunday morning bedroom acrobatics before she went to church.

Just heard my pops is putting it off till mid to late april... I bet the odds aren't getting any better.

I had no idea the artery wall could stretch like that, but I guess 9cm is the super critical range... effin a.

um, if your dad puts that off till april, he will be dead before then.

My dad almost had an aortic aneurysm a few years ago. He started having cramps in his groin area. He thought appendicitis or food poisoning. He went to work, and the pain got worse. some co workers took him to the ER. His aorta had expanded to 9cm. They told him that 5 cm was when they got worried, anything over that, you didn't have much of a chance of living long. If it is at 9cm, its only a matter of time before it bursts. If it does, he will bleed out in about 2.5 minutes. Tell him to go back to the hospital and have the surgery IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Whoa, easy there...
Unless it's ruptured or dissected, there is no reason to do emergency repair. The best thing to do in terms of optimizing his chances for a successful surgery is to ensure that his blood pressure is well controlled prior to surgery and that his other medical issues are well-taken care of prior to going under the knife.

The major determinants for elective surgical repair of a AAA are:
1) size, with 5 cm as the operative cutoff in general.
2) rate of expansion. > 0.5 cm/ 6 months is cause for more concern.
