Default AWD Gas Tank, Really Different..?

So im in the middle of a 2 day sprint to get the AWD swap done start to finish, today we got a lot done, rear ends and trannys are ready to be swapped.

now I KNOW that you need to switch the gas tanks... but can someone point out WHERE they are different between FWD and AWD? because we can seriously not find a single thing that is different in them...

im almost tempted to just try it without swapping, any ideas what may go wrong? thanks-goin back out to work on it in 8 hours.

oh yeah- i have a 95 impreza coupe AWD donor car, and a 95 impreza base coupe recipient

I remember reading this on some old post somewhere, but I believe that in 95 some of the FWD cars came with AWD tanks.

The difference you are looking for is in the middle portion of the tank. The FWD tank does not have that channel for the driveshaft to go through.

BTW: Any parts you don't plan on keeping?

are you kidding me!? because it definetly does have the channel for the driveshaft, it looks exactly the same from the outside as the AWD tank...

what parts do you need? because im going to take the parts i need then get rid of it except for some things that i might think nasioc'ers would need. let me know im at OSU

if your 95 is FWD then the gas tank should have been flat on the bottom. AWD gas tanks have a tunnel in the middle that the drive shaft fits through. there's not much room between the drive shaft and the gas tank so its a must.

then you already have the AWD tank, lucky you(it's never fun dropping a fuel tank on your back).

Jeremy

p.s.: it'd only make sense that they started to use only AWD tanks, it's cheaper to make one fuel tank then 2

i didn't even see the date on this thread....haha

i had planned an AWD swap for my fiance's L but have just determined that the car is too "soft" to warrant any such actions

FWIW, AWD tank is positively identified by having two fuel level sending units.
Add: this applies to 15.9 gal. tank both halves of which have the same depth,
but probably not to the smaller tank where the left half does not drop down.

and they still make two tanks, not just one for awd. 13gal and 16gal. 13 gal is most L's and 16gal is OBS, legacy, and L wagon?. both fit both vehicles for reference. and i got an awd 13 gal tank that is sealed if anyone is interested. i got a fuel cell, and would like to help someone out if possible. --keith
